Martin of Simple Homeschool and <a href=\"https:\/\/introvertedmoms.com\/join\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Introverted Moms<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ya&#8217;ll, I put my son on the school bus this morning&#8230;and then sobbed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not because it was the wrong thing to do; I know in my bones it couldn&#8217;t be more right. But because this whole summer has been a series of small endings, and this morning was the final one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My homeschooling journey of 15 years is officially over.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>I&#8217;m so proud of all three of my &#8220;no-longer-kid&#8221; kids:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Trishna (age 20), learning so much about herself and the world as she works in her first job<\/li>\n<li>Jonathan (age 19), on tour with the Jonas Brothers as their Lighting Director through the end of 2023<\/li>\n<li>Elijah (age 18), beginning our town&#8217;s school program for special needs students ages 18-22<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each one of them has stepped out of their comfort zones in new ways this year and has continued developing their unique skills, gifts, and potential &#8211; does it get any better than that as a parent?!<\/p>\n<p><strong>At my homeschool <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CumazPyL9Nh\/?next=%2Fjamie_cmartin%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retirement party<\/a> back in June,<\/strong> I shared with our closest friends a reflection I&#8217;d written to give a snapshot of all of the highs and lows that come with the journey of home education.<\/p>\n<p>Today I wanted to share it with you as well below! Note: I also recorded the poem for <a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Episode 116 of my Simple Homeschool podcast<\/strong><\/a> and chatted more in-depth about the end of the journey if you care to listen in!<\/p>\n<p><strong>In <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-end-of-our-homeschooling-journey\/id1485152841?i=1000623184647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Episode 116<\/a> my son Jonathan joined me <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CwF2YrTu3T-\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before he hit the road with Nick, Joe, and Kevin<\/a> that is, LOL)<\/em> and we also talked about the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The different components of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CurxIlTJjm8\/?next=%2Fjamie_cmartin%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>my retirement party<\/strong><\/a>: pop quiz, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/Cv-RMqkLXSv\/?next=%2Fjamie_cmartin%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>champagne toast<\/strong><\/a>, poetry, prayer<\/li>\n<li>The letter Jonathan wrote to me when he graduated in 2022<\/li>\n<li>Jamie reads aloud the poem she wrote and read at her homeschool retirement<\/li>\n<li>Find pics\/video of my retirement party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jamie_cmartin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>pinned on my Instagram profile<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;\" title=\"Embed Player\" src=\"https:\/\/play.libsyn.com\/embed\/episode\/id\/27634662\/height\/128\/theme\/modern\/size\/standard\/thumbnail\/yes\/custom-color\/3ebdc0\/time-start\/00:00:00\/playlist-height\/200\/direction\/backward\/download\/yes\" width=\"100%\" height=\"128\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64688\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64688\" style=\"width: 638px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_7189.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-64688\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_7189-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_7189-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_7189-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_7189-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_7189.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>In 2014 on our <a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/little-house-site-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Little House road trip <\/strong><\/a>&#8211; the days are LONG but the years are short<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>I Am: On Crying in the Shower\/Ending the Homeschooling Journey<\/h2>\n<p>I cry in the shower.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s a certain spot where I lean my forehead, watch tears join the water stream, flow as one down the glass.<br \/>\n<em>I want to quit.<\/em> Instead I get a towel, prepare for another day.<br \/>\nI tell myself, \u201c10 years from now, I\u2019ll be glad I kept going,\u201d <strong>And I am.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I rest my childhood copy of Farmer Boy on the counter,<\/em> surrounded by flour, rolling pin and messes waiting for later.<br \/>\nThe scent of apple turnovers, like Ma used to make, infiltrates the kitchen and seeps onto the porch.<br \/>\nSoon the still-hot treats burn small, impatient fingers as I pick up the book and read to captivated ears.<br \/>\n\u201c10 years from now this will be nothing more than a memory,\u201d I remind myself. <strong>And it is.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I sit next to a child at the table and wonder what&#8217;s wrong.<br \/>\n<em>Sensing I should ask, I also just want to get this assignment done.<\/em> I inhale<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>impatience, exhale a question: \u201cIs something bothering you?\u201d<br \/>\nOut it comes: the fear, the worry, the burden. I can&#8217;t fix it, but I can half its weight.<br \/>\n\u201c10 years from now I&#8217;ll be glad I stopped the lesson,\u201d I tell myself. <strong>And I am.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I glance out the window to see childhood innocence in motion.<\/em><br \/>\nOn the tree swing, a colorful dress-up cape flutters with each push, kite\u2019s tail caught by the wind.<br \/>\nI stop the dishes, pick up my camera, head outside.<br \/>\n\u201c10 years from now I will still treasure this moment.\u201d <strong>And I do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I passed Weary two miles ago and can&#8217;t check off another box.<\/em><br \/>\nDeclaring it movie day, sofas and thick blankets become our desks and chairs as favorite stories take shape before us.<br \/>\nChatter ceases for at least a minute, as I sip Earl Grey and rest my eyes.<br \/>\n\u201c10 years from now, \u201c I convince myself, \u201cI&#8217;ll be relieved I pressed pause on this day.\u201d <strong>And I am.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I close the read aloud as an impromptu theatre production breaks out.<br \/>\n<em>They grab props, costumes, and each other<\/em>: one the villain, the others the heroes.<br \/>\nI fulfill my role as audience, then gently segue to a new activity before fighting erupts.<br \/>\n\u201c10 years from now I\u2019ll remember this performance, made for my eyes only.\u201d <strong>And I do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I pray downstairs as shouts descend one floor above, derailing my beautifully laid-out plans.<br \/>\nSurrounded by comfort objects: Bible, books, earplugs, <em>I ask God for the millionth time: \u201cAm I doing anything right for these children?\u201d<\/em><br \/>\nOnce again he whispers words I once again try to believe:<br \/>\n\u201c10 years from now, you&#8217;ll clearly see the impact your work has made on their lives.\u201d <strong>And I can.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A lifetime of daily memories thread together on a string, but not the glimmering garland of pearls you&#8217;d want decorating your tree.<br \/>\n<em>Ours is rough and ragged, bitter and sweet forever fused together.<\/em><br \/>\nMy moments of inadequacy match those of plenty, yet my loaves and fish multiply.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m there for every first word read, milestone reached, lesson learned.<br \/>\nBy God\u2019s grace I longed to give them the education I never received. <strong>And I have.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I go back in time, slide a note under the door to the discouraged mom stepping out of the shower.<\/em><br \/>\n\u201c10 years from now,\u201d it reads, \u201cthe thousands of snapshots of delight, sorrow, laughter, sacrifice, and growth will be worth it, but not just for your kids\u2026<br \/>\nYou will have evolved into a completely different, much stronger person.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>And I am.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*****<\/p>\n<p><em>For those of you who have already or are just now ending the homeschooling journey too, I&#8217;d love to know what the transition has been like for you! <a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/ending-the-homeschooling-journey\/#comments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Share your thoughts in the comments below!\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-end-of-our-homeschooling-journey\/id1485152841?i=1000623184647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-64687\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/116-square-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"ending the homeschooling journey\" width=\"432\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/116-square-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/116-square-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/116-square-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/116-square-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/116-square-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/116-square.jpg 1138w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/quiz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What&#8217;s Your Homeschool Mom Personality?
