It&#8217;s also commonly called interest-led learning or delight-directed homeschooling. <strong>But f<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>ollowing a child-led learning approach <em>doesn&#8217;t<\/em> have to mean your child has complete control over their education.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once we discovered the benefits of following our child&#8217;s lead, we knew it was the right choice for our family. <strong>Taking an interest-led approach to our daughter&#8217;s learning led to creating unique and creative products we can use together as a family.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our daughter, Emily&#8217;s interests determine what we will learn about and I can always weave together her latest curiosity or passion into a unit study that encompasses lots of different subjects <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as art, history, music, science, and geography.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>A common misconception about following a child-led approach is that it will spoil your children.<\/strong> Giving them the reins in something as important as their education will surely cause them to be spoiled, right?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, child-led learning won&#8217;t spoil your children. Plus, you can play a whole lot of different games with just a deck of playing cards! <strong>When you&#8217;re gameschooling, there&#8217;s no limit to what your kids can learn.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, it&#8217;s a fun and easy way to incorporate Emily&#8217;s love of games into any lesson she might find challenging or \u201cboring.\u201d <strong>For example, our love of family game night is how Emily finally memorized her math facts!<\/strong> Yahtzee helped her remember all kinds of addition and multiplication facts quickly while having fun too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can discover more about how we use games for interest-led learning in our homeschool and why we think<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewaldockway.com\/why-games-are-an-essential-part-of-interest-led-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">games are an essential part of interest-led learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-63256\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-3.jpg\" alt=\"Learning to Follow My Child\u2019s Lead in Our Homeschool\" width=\"675\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-3.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-3-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-3-1024x623.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-3-768x467.jpg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-3-1536x934.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Morning Baskets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morning baskets aren&#8217;t necessarily a child-led learning tool, but we have turned them into one.<strong> In our homeschool, we theme our morning baskets to match Emily&#8217;s interests and line up with what we&#8217;re currently studying.<\/strong> Before we started theming our morning baskets, Emily would lead us down a rabbit trail about one poem, story, or picture in the morning basket and we would never make it back to the other items.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, Emily not only chooses the theme for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewaldockway.com\/interest-led-morning-baskets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our morning basket,<\/span><\/a> but s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he picks all the books, games, resources, and activities that go in our morning baskets too. <strong>She&#8217;s learning how to budget, choose items wisely, and learning more about all the topics that interest her too.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-63255 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-2.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-2-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-2-1024x660.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-2-768x495.jpg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-2-1536x990.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unit Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unit studies have become the most important way that we incorporate child-led learning in our homeschool journey. We began a child-led approach early in our homeschool when Emily expressed an interest in \u201cdoing school with Jack and Annie,\u201d characters in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Magic Treehouse <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">book series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <strong>I ran with her newfound interest and created a whole curriculum focused around learning history, geography, science, art, and music while traveling through time with Jack and Annie.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewaldockway.com\/product\/passport-to-adventures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passports to Adventure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unit study would only be the beginning of all sorts of fun learning adventures! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>This year we are on a brand new adventure, discovering the human body with our\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewaldockway.com\/product\/human-body-unit-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Human Body Unit Study<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; covering all kinds of important topics with hands on experiments, games, books, films, and fun resources.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-63257 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-4.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-4-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-4-1024x619.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-4-768x464.jpg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/The-Waldock-Way-Homeschooling-4-1536x928.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>The hardest part of child-led learning in our homeschool<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letting go and leaning into homeschooling as a lifestyle was the hardest part of child-led learning for me. It was hard to break free from the traditional school mindset and envision something new and different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Our biggest reasons for homeschooling have always been fostering a deeper connection and relationship with our daughter and ensuring that she understands learning is a life-long journey.<\/strong> Child-led learning has helped us do that in incredible ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ll admit it, I sometimes have nagging doubts and wonder if we are doing enough, but they quickly pass. Using\u00a0my<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewaldockway.com\/grade-level-checklists-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> grade level checklists<\/a> before you begin a brand new child-led learning adventure can help i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f the doubts are creeping in on you too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Remember that there is no such thing as &#8216;behind&#8217; in homeschooling.<\/strong> Give yourself lots of grace.
