He says he has been up since 5:30am. <strong>Yep, crazily enough it <em>is<\/em> possible to have an early to bed, early to rise teenager, and I have one<\/strong>&#8211;through absolutely no effort of my own!<\/p>\n<p><b>7:00am<\/b> &#8211; I sit down in the living room to do an hour of Creative Work for my <a href=\"https:\/\/introvertedmoms.com\/join\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Introverted Moms Community<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year we&#8217;re choosing Habits of the Month to work on. I make notes for the new video I will record<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0soon to announce our next habit to members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>7:20am<\/b> &#8211; Elijah (15) runs down and asks me to turn on his audiobook, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2LEK5cg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(afflinks) &#8211; it&#8217;s his second time through this 57 hour audio! He is fascinated by military history.<\/p>\n<p>A little later I say hi to my daughter Trishna (17) who comes in to fold the laundry, one of her <a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/stop-cleaning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">main family responsibilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:00am<\/strong> &#8211; Jonathan&#8217;s Geometry lesson hasn&#8217;t gone well, so I attempt to cheer him up with a few memes, and when we are both laughing I head upstairs to get dressed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2497.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-62330 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2497-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"651\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2497-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2497-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2497-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2497-800x600.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2497-550x413.jpeg 550w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2497-350x263.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2497-260x195.jpeg 260w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2497.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 651px) 100vw, 651px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>I listen to my audio Bible while in the shower, bathing myself in the word of God <em>and<\/em>\u00a0hot water to prepare for the day,<\/strong> then follow that with an <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/dare-break-free-from-anxiety\/id1034311206\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-anxiety meditation<\/a> as I get dressed.<\/p>\n<p>When I come out of the bathroom, I put away our newly-folded laundry, even if it means we won&#8217;t start the homeschool day exactly at 9am. <strong>I&#8217;ve found this is the only time of day I have energy to do it!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>9:10am<\/strong> &#8211; We sit down at the table to enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/cnn10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN10<\/a> as part of our &#8220;Breakfast School,&#8221; then move on to our current read-aloud, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Z6ocFX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Dream Giver<\/a> (highly recommended to read with your teens!).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Because of our schedules we only do these short read-aloud sessions twice a week!<\/strong> I can&#8217;t give it up altogether though, not after all these years.<\/p>\n<p>We finish a little early today, so we reach into the &#8220;prayer bowl&#8221; at the center of the table. We&#8217;ve filled it with people, organizations, countries, and causes on our hearts, and each of us choose one slip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amazingly enough, today Jonathan has randomly chosen the one that says &#8220;Simple Homeschool readers.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He says a prayer for all of you, friends, that you would find encouragement and perseverance on your path as you teach your children today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2503.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-62328 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2503-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2503-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2503-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2503-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2503.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>9:45am<\/strong> &#8211; I dismiss the kids to their cleaning jobs, and sit down with my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3af7haN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">prayer book<\/a> for a moment before starting my own decluttering job.<\/p>\n<p>I find that without these small, sacred pauses I am prone to rushing, which leads to worry and anxiety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10:15am<\/strong> &#8211; My job these days, as a homeschool mom to three teens, has a lot to do with getting resources for everyone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I check to see what books Trishna and Jonathan need this week for <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/tjedhigh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TJED High<\/a>, and I put Trishna\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/37pC5U6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new Bible study for teen girls<\/a> on her Kindle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All of us have started a meditation practice this year, using the app <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calm.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Calm<\/a>, so Trishna comes in after finishing her cleaning to ask me which meditation she should do today.<\/p>\n<p><em>(I will also mention that this practice hasn\u2019t been popular among a couple of family members, but we have called it one of our homeschooling essentials. I&#8217;ve found it to be worth it!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>10:30am<\/strong> &#8211; I sit down to do <a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/aar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reading and math<\/a> with 15-year-old Elijah.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2664.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-62356\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2664-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2664-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2664-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2664-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2664-800x600.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2664-550x413.jpeg 550w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2664-350x263.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2664-260x195.jpeg 260w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2664.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because of his learning disabilities, we continue to work hard to grasp the basics &#8211; like we&#8217;ve been doing for the past seven years or so!<\/p>\n<p>This means that lessons can be tiresome and exhausting for BOTH of us, which leads me to:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Connecting with Kids Tip#1: Pray before challenging lessons.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I find that praying before a lesson, reminds us <em>both<\/em> to have patience with each other, to be grateful for this opportunity to learn, and to remind us that we aren&#8217;t just trying to get through it, but to keep our relationship the focus and goal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2510.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-62326 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2510-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2510-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2510-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2510-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2510.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>11:05am<\/strong> &#8211; Afterwards, I head upstairs to sit in quiet for my own 10 minute meditation, getting distracted and bringing my thoughts back approximately 100 times, which they say is the point!<\/p>\n<p><strong>11:25am<\/strong> &#8211; Then I leave with my daughter to drop her off at her piano teacher&#8217;s house nearby.<\/p>\n<p>On the way we listen to a few songs from her Amazon Music playlist.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Connecting with Kids Tip#2: When relationships feel strained, try music (or another interest).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s amazing how much showing a little interest in the music a child enjoys begins to tear down walls that have formed between you!<\/p>\n<p><strong>11:50am<\/strong> &#8211; When I return I sit down with a few tortilla chips, carrots, and hummus &#8211; my current lunch of choice.<\/p>\n<p>Soon I leave to pick Trishna up again, and as I wait for her to come out I read for a few minutes. #selfcareonthego<\/p>\n<p><strong>12:25pm<\/strong> &#8211; After we&#8217;ve returned and settled in, I sit down with Jonathan for the first half of his <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/aarsimple\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">All About Spelling<\/a><\/strong> lesson. <em>(This program has been an absolute answer to prayer!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Still discouraged by his Geometry struggles in the day, he suddenly says, &#8220;Why did you read <em>Anne of Green Gables<\/em> to us when we were younger? Now I&#8217;m just like Anne when it comes to Geometry!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;But if I&#8217;m like Anne&#8230;,&#8221; he goes on, &#8220;&#8230;you&#8217;re like my Miss Stacy.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a few seconds he adds, &#8220;Make sure you put that in your post.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>You never know the unexpected moments of delight that might appear in your day as a homeschool mom!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2525.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-62325 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2525-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2525-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2525-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2525-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2525-800x600.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2525-550x413.jpeg 550w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2525-350x263.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2525-260x195.jpeg 260w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2525.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>12:50pm<\/strong> &#8211; Trishna is currently doing Duolingo Spanish, Elijah has returned to military history on audio in his room, and Jonathan has gone upstairs to study in uninterrupted quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I pause to tidy up bookshelves and the kitchen, then sit down to peek through some of the kids&#8217; work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1:30pm<\/strong> &#8211; Jonathan comes to finish his spelling lesson, and after 20 minutes of writing dictated sentences I can tell he needs a brain break.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I send him out in the frigid air to &#8220;take a couple of turns,&#8221; a Jane Austen term we&#8217;ve adopted, referring to walking around our 5-acre property.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While he&#8217;s out I write captions on our &#8220;Best of 2020&#8221; photo album. Amazingly, 2020 looks pretty good when you&#8217;re only viewing the highlight reel!<\/p>\n<p><strong>2:05pm<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0Trishna is now working on PreAlgebra, Elijah has moved on to <em>The Tempest<\/em> on audio, and Jonathan and I are in front of the wood stove for what we call our 2pm &#8220;reading hour.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Connecting with Kids Tip #3: Try the Chapter a Day Book Club<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2532.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-62324\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2532-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2532-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2532-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2532-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_2532.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As your kids get older and begin doing more of their homeschool work independently, it&#8217;s easy to feel disconnected.\u00a0Enter the Chapter a Day Book Club.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s simple: Choose a title together and agree to read one chapter a day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This way you are always at the same part of the book, and can discuss it easily.
