Anderson<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>A note from Jamie: In the midst of all the uncertainty surrounding us, friends, Kara&#8217;s post and her book, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3uW3FkQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><i>More Than Enough: Grow Your Confidence, Banish Burnout and Love Your Homeschool Life<\/i><\/a>, are even more needed to encourage us when life gets tough&#8211;enjoy!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"\u201cdrop_cap&quot;\">S<\/span>omething hard happened a few weeks ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We went to a new doctor, who got very hung up on homeschooling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Prefer to listen instead?<\/em><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"\/\/html5-player.libsyn.com\/embed\/episode\/id\/19719599\/height\/90\/theme\/custom\/thumbnail\/yes\/direction\/backward\/render-playlist\/no\/custom-color\/3ebdc0\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"90\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Instead of focusing on health questions, he asked a lot of school questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCan you type?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo you take classes online?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat are your college plans?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the zinger &#8211; \u201cAre you at grade level in all of your subjects?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We left feeling frustrated because it seemed like homeschooling had become a distraction to what brought us there in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only later did some other feelings creep in for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Doubt. Fear. Worry.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And an old friend showed up. I call her the Worry Elephant. She sits on my chest at midnight and whispers. I hear that I can\u2019t do this. That I\u2019m messing up. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3uW3FkQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That I\u2019m not enough<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>When homeschool doubt creeps in &#8211; you are enough<\/h2>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Traditional school is not a guarantee<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So here\u2019s the thing: We are still doing something fairly unproven. Although \u201chomeschooling\u201d was the way people learned long ago, once schools popped up everywhere, they became the standard, and then the \u201cnormal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I doubt that doc would have asked any of those questions if my child went to public school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Because our culture sees public school as some kind of guarantee.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course schools will do a good job. Of course they\u2019ll keep our kids at grade level.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But public school can\u2019t actually guarantee anything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids still get Ds. They fall behind. They fail. They drop-out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They may skate by without learning certain concepts because with one teacher to 25 or 30 kids, not everyone is getting enough attention to know if they truly understand lowest common multiples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So that kid gets an F on the fractions test, but is moved along to the next concept anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-61547 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/doubt-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/doubt-2-1.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/doubt-2-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><b>A lot to<\/b> carry<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, homeschoolers get the side-eye because we\u2019re weird, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve chosen this crazy alternative. <strong>And even though colleges like Harvard are opening their doors for homeschooled kids, homeschooling really only re-emerged a generation ago.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in one generation it\u2019s changed exponentially through technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So it shouldn\u2019t be our job to prove anything to the world at large, but unfortunately, we\u2019re sort of carrying that weight. You know, on top of the weight of responsibility of educating our children.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Shaking off the doubt<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So of course doubt creeps in. Because we want to do this well. <strong>None of us is okay with failure when it comes to our kids\u2019 futures.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when the doctor started questioning my child, a lot of old fears resurfaced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I felt shaken and gut-punched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have a child approaching graduation, and there are a lot of big \u201ctests\u201d on the horizon &#8211; the SAT, college admission \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s already a scary time, and then that doctor preyed on some of our biggest fears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-61551 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/doubt-main-vertical-pico.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/doubt-main-vertical-pico.jpg 500w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/doubt-main-vertical-pico-247x300.jpg 247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>So how am I moving past those worries and refocusing?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well luckily, that\u2019s something I have a lot of experience with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, I look at my kids. Are they learning? Yes. Are they learning what their public school counterparts are learning? Sheesh &#8211; probably not. Right now they are doing deep dives into politics and creating music and engrossed in chemistry and forensics and otherwise being amazing.<br \/>\n<\/span>I mean yes &#8211; we\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/transcript\/\">building a transcript<\/a> and covering requirements, but it\u2019s not always neat and tidy.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, I remember why we homeschool in the first place. Oh my goodness &#8211; it\u2019s because my kids are unique and quirky and fascinating and I didn\u2019t want them squished into a system.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then I focus on what homeschooling has given us &#8211; the kind of relationship I wanted with my kids. We are a team.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, I remember that we are doing something against the norm, and that takes a ton of courage. It\u2019s hard to be brave all the time, so it\u2019s okay to feel shaken. But courage is not the absence of fear &#8211; it\u2019s being scared, but continuing on in spite of that fear.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-61548 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/doubt-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/doubt-3.jpeg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/doubt-3-300x218.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>A bit more about<\/b> doubt<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, there will be so many times in homeschooling that we doubt ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will question again and again if we are equipped to do this &#8211; if we are enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3uW3FkQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I want to tell you that you are<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, it doesn\u2019t matter what the doubters say &#8211; they lack imagination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, no one loves your child more or is more invested in his or her future than you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third, I\u2019ve started to make friends with my Worry Elephant. Because I\u2019ve realized that all those night when I thought she was just trying to freak me out, she was actually reminding me of something vital:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>We worry because we love our kids so much.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we will not fail them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That intense fear we feel can only be that intense because of our boundless love for our kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So will this journey be perfect? Probably not. Will it look like the traditional school journey?
