Anderson<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"\u201cdrop_cap&quot;\">L<\/span>ast Friday, I jumped in my car and headed north about an hour and a half from home to stay at a monastery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My plan was to finish a book I\u2019ve been working on, and also, maybe learn a bit about monastic life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wish now that my intention hadn\u2019t been to <em>finish<\/em> my book, because it was such an incredible experience; I wish I could have immersed myself more fully instead of spending most of my time on my computer typing. <em>(Still, I did finish! Yeah!)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61189 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery3-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I had time for communal meals, a few hikes around the grounds, silence and prayer, and <strong>I realized during my time at the monastery that there were a lot of things I could take home and apply to my life as a homeschool mom.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Would you rather listen to this post?<\/em><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"\/\/html5-player.libsyn.com\/embed\/episode\/id\/14388752\/height\/90\/theme\/custom\/thumbnail\/yes\/direction\/backward\/render-playlist\/no\/custom-color\/3ebdc0\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"90\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve always been big on wanting <a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/8-ways-having-a-rhythm-helps-a-moms-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rhythm and routines<\/a>, but they just don\u2019t come naturally to me. So here are a few things I want to adapt:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61197 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monasteryPICO.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monasteryPICO.jpg 400w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monasteryPICO-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chimes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing I noticed almost immediately after I checked myself into my dorm room was the chimes. <strong>At the monastery where I stayed, bells chime on the hour, the half-hour and 5 minutes before prayer.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would have thought that maybe the prayer bells would have been the quietest, but it was just the opposite &#8211; every bell chimed again and again to call the sisters and guests to the oratory. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It felt like they were announcing a celebration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61196 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery2.jpg 525w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery2-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I used to have <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/westminster-chimes-lite\/id488613215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an app on my phone<\/a> that chimed to signal the hour, and I think I\u2019ll reinstall it. <strong>For me, hearing the monastery chimes became a reminder to take a few deep breaths, stretch, and move for a minute.<\/strong> I think that could be helpful in my life at home with my kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tea time is every time<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I actually brought a tea kettle from home, because tea is important to me, especially when I\u2019m writing. But there was no need &#8211; there was a simple kitchen on each floor, and in the main kitchen, there was hot water available at all times and a selection of tea bags.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were also presented with pitchers of fruit-water at each meal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I quickly realized how easy and tempting it was to stay hydrated at the monastery, and how cozy it felt to have tea so available.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think this would be helpful to adapt for home, especially as we enter the cold, dry winter months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61193 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery7.jpg 525w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery7-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery7-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery7-260x195.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silence<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside the dorm, phones, radios and televisions are not allowed, so there was plenty of silence, which was actually very comforting. I tend to be <a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/sensitive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sensitive to sounds<\/a>, so the quiet was welcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also silence the chimes between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I think eliminating electronics here between 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. could be lovely!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meals<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The monastery meals were prepared by a chef, using ingredients grown right on the grounds. They were simple, but nourishing and delicious. Each lunch and dinner included a fresh green salad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the meals were served buffet style, which I soon realized meant everyone could take as much of what they wanted, and it eliminated trying to deliver hot plates to the sisters and guests all at once.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Even though we are a small family, meal times often feel stressful for me because of the \u201clast minute rush\u201d to get everything plated.<\/strong> I think I\u2019m switching to buffet style from now on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I stayed at a Benedictine monastery, and one of the principles of Benedictine life is hospitality, so the meals were a time to connect with the sisters and my fellow guests. I enjoyed the pace of the meal &#8211; this was one of the things that made me wish I hadn\u2019t given myself a deadline &#8211; it was nice to eat slowly, converse, and just be together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61190 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery4.jpg 400w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery4-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monastic life<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>In fact, the four characteristics of a monastic community are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common prayer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common meals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common dialogue<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That reminds me of many homeschooling families, I know, actually!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Also, those who work within the monastery are encouraged to find a healthy balance between prayer, work and leisure. Yes, please!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61191 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery5.jpg 400w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery5-297x300.jpg 297w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/monastery5-80x80.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simplified spaces<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, I was really inspired by the simple spaces I saw in the monastery. <strong>Everything had a purpose and a place, and nothing felt cluttered.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It sort of made me want to come home and PURGE.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But luckily, I was reminded that work (even housekeeping) is just one part of a balanced life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I will purge soon, but I\u2019ll also read, and pray and study and be, and each time I hear a chime, I\u2019ll try to remember to breathe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alert\"><i>Have you every had a trip that transformed you?
