Anderson<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"\u201cdrop_cap&quot;\">I<\/span> quit homeschooling once.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember the day actually &#8211; it was two houses ago now, and I was pacing in my living room. I had my sleeping 1-year-old held to my chest in a baby sling, and it was cold, because it was December and that drafty Victorian was always chilly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had started in September after a year of church preschool. Preschool had been rocky because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.karasanderson.com\/im-just-so-glad-he-didnt-sit-on-the-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my son didn\u2019t like to sit on the line<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was a whole thing &#8211; the teacher kept talking to me after class, and I wasn\u2019t sure what to do, but I was gradually realizing that the school wasn\u2019t a good fit for my precocious boy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Would you prefer to listen to this post?<\/em><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"\/\/html5-player.libsyn.com\/embed\/episode\/id\/11796287\/height\/90\/theme\/custom\/thumbnail\/yes\/direction\/backward\/render-playlist\/no\/custom-color\/3ebdc0\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"90\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we decided to try homeschooling. I spent the summer reading books and getting our little home classroom ready.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We started off strong &#8211; perhaps too strong. I realize now that I had an even mixture of zeal and terror.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My son, age 4, had shown a casual interest in knights and castles, and so I read the kids Robin Hood. (I mean, I tried to read the kids Robin Hood &#8211; they were 1 and 4 and the book was an inch thick and didn\u2019t have one picture &#8211; not even on the cover).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We made paper because paper was invented in Medieval Times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we planned out a huge Medieval feast. We ate with the lights off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, I also tried to follow a book curriculum, and tried to practice Waldorf methodology like my life depended on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it any wonder that I burned out before Christmas?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-61065\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/quit-horiz.PICO_.jpg\" alt=\"I quit homeschooling once\" width=\"442\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/quit-horiz.PICO_.jpg 500w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/quit-horiz.PICO_-231x300.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had jumped in a little too far. I was trying to do homeschool so fully, so completely, when that half-year could have been spent reading, playing and not trying to cram 1,000 years of history into 4 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had such relief when the little Montessori-esque preschool accepted my son.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Trying again<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We actually really liked the Montessori school. It had a tree growing in its library. My son loved \u201cMath Mat Time\u201d and music class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the school told us that the next year, they wanted to move our 4-year-old into the 6- to 9-year-old classroom because he was an early reader.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We still had another child to consider &#8211; and full-days in their grade school were considerably more expensive than the preschool had been.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And so, we decided to try homeschooling one more time. And that time, it stuck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We just entered out 12th year, and although I\u2019ve experienced plenty of worry and doubt, I\u2019ve never considered quitting again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>So what changed?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think I was very lucky that I burned out early. The stakes were still pretty low. Even when we started again, I could reason that it was \u201cjust\u201d Kindergarten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But more than that, I realized that if we were in this for the long haul, <\/span><b>we had to start treating it like a marathon, and not a race.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61063 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/quit-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/quit-2.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/quit-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had to pace myself, and stop for (water) breaks, and I had to take a bit more control over how we homeschooled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>When we first started, I used a method that made me feel bad ALL THE TIME.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when I decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehomeschoolsisters.com\/2019\/04\/09\/methods-philosophies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">take the parts of that philosophy that worked for us<\/a>, and leave the rest behind, I found a new freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Seeing my people<\/h4>\n<p><strong>I also decided that the most important part of our homeschool experience was the relationships.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing worked when I pushed. I\u2019m a highly-sensitive introvert, and an Enneagram 9 &#8211; that means that pushing is entirely against my nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I needed to factor in every person who lived in our house, because home and homeschool are not separate. <\/span><b>I had to make sure I never again put the dogma ahead of my people.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I decided that if we were going to thrive, I had to quit seeing the Internet as a massive homeschool assignment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are so many wonderful ideas out there &#8211; but we need to keep them in their place. Ideas are great, but if we\u2019re going to stay sane, we have to pick and choose. <strong>We have to be homeschool minimalists &#8211; wherein we do what works for us and leave the rest.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61064 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/quit-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/quit-3.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/quit-3-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Learn from my mistakes<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you were to ask me how you can avoid burning out this year, this is what I would tell you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Breaks are so important<\/strong>. Take them when you need them. That means if you can NOT teach one more math lesson until the kitchen gets back to a point of at least being functional, it\u2019s okay.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Stop following social media accounts that make you feel bad.<\/strong> I don\u2019t care if someone has 100,000 followers or all your friends sing someone\u2019s praises.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of which, <strong>listen to your gut.<\/strong> Mama Intuition is powerful. Don\u2019t ignore how you feel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Develop a self-care routine.<\/strong> This doesn\u2019t have to be fancy. Maybe your routine is reading a book in your room each afternoon during nap\/quiet time. Maybe it&#8217;s a night with friends once a month.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Learn about your personality<\/strong> and what you need to thrive. Introverts: read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2r4QmQQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamie\u2019s book<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! (afflink)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Find a friend you can be honest with<\/strong>, who won\u2019t tell you after a bad day that maybe you should quit homeschooling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Realize that you can make mistakes.<\/strong> It\u2019s okay. We ALL make mistakes. We all try a math program that bombs &#8211; and online craft project tutorials? Forgetaboutit.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mostly, I want you to give yourself so much grace. You are one person. We all are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So do your best, and on the hard days, jump into bed as early as you can and promise yourself you\u2019ll try again in the morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember Emerson &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>\u201cFinish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t you love that?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can always begin again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alert\"><i>Have you ever considered quitting homeschooling?
