But I think I&#8217;m getting ready.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I could do nothing but listen, smile, encourage. After all, I have no frame of reference for this type of education myself. I would never have been able to make this type of comment as a young teen, since I never truly owned my education until college.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dayinthelife2018picmo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-56515\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dayinthelife2018picmo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"329\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dayinthelife2018picmo.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dayinthelife2018picmo-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When allowed to choose, I&#8217;ve seen that my children eventually notice their need for the subjects that, in a typical school setting, kids are forced to begin and master so early they never have the chance to even comprehend their relevance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And who can ever stop someone from learning when they have decided they want to, and when they have all the resources and time they need at their fingertips?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The answer? No one.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I share this conversation to shed light on the philosophy that undergirds our family&#8217;s days, which now include a 14-, 13-, and 12-year-old.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s a quick overview of our typical homeschool day:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jamie&#8217;s Morning Work Session<\/li>\n<li>Breakfast School<\/li>\n<li>Family Work<\/li>\n<li>Learning Time<\/li>\n<li>Lunch\/Drop Everything and Read<\/li>\n<li>Learning Time<\/li>\n<li>Outdoors<\/li>\n<li>Afternoon Projects<\/li>\n<li>Dinner\/Evening Routine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And here&#8217;s what each of those blocks means:<\/p>\n<h4>Morning Work Session<\/h4>\n<p>I start a typical day with writing time (anywhere from 15-45 minutes), followed by quick checks and any necessary work on this blog, my Facebook page, or email.\u00a0<strong>This way I know I&#8217;m beginning my day with calm and focus, no matter what twists and turns come in the hours that follow.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards I log off, physically <em>and<\/em> mentally. Then I take a shower and dress before our homeschool day officially begins.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Jamies-homeschool-day-in-the-life.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-56948\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Jamies-homeschool-day-in-the-life-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"613\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Jamies-homeschool-day-in-the-life-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Jamies-homeschool-day-in-the-life-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Jamies-homeschool-day-in-the-life.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Breakfast School<\/h4>\n<p>While the kids eat, they learn! I direct and guide this time, which allows me to focus on whatever I feel like we currently have a need for or feel inspired by.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Right now that includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A loop that rotates: <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2D4moos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener rel= \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Phonograms<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2AQtK8T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener rel= \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Grammar<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bedtimemath.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Math<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2APSXAB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener rel= \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Periodic Table<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Bible and Devotional Reading<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2mskqmI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener rel= \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Etiquette e-course<\/a> <em>(This life skills online course has been SUCH a good addition to our routine!)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2DsvQyM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">Current read-aloud<\/a> <em>(We move into the living room and get cozy with blankets for this.)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Family Work<\/h4>\n<p>Each child has an assigned area\/task (downstairs, upstairs, kitchen, or dinner prep), so I give job assignments and send them on their way.\u00a0I love that having older kids equals many hands that make light work! I check their work afterwards for quality control. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Then we all do any needed self-care that hasn&#8217;t yet been completed: fixing hair, brushing teeth, etc.<\/p>\n<h4>Learning Time<\/h4>\n<p>This is an open block of time, both before and after lunch. I see myself as its guardian\/protector. My job? To &#8220;hold the space&#8221; for learning and inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>Like <a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/experimentyear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kari shared in the fall<\/a>, I try to ditch multi-tasking during this period in order to stay focused on our education, more available to help when needed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5091.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-56817\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5091.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"647\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5091.jpg 700w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5091-550x413.jpg 550w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5091-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5091-260x195.jpg 260w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_5091-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 647px) 100vw, 647px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Not every day is the same, and we don&#8217;t want it to be!<\/strong> That would be boring, and we don&#8217;t believe learning has to bore us.<\/p>\n<p>This time is usually devoted to reading (LOTS of reading!), creative writing, projects someone gets inspired by, computer work, math, spelling, <a href=\"https:\/\/learning.tjed.org\/courses\/tjed-high\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener rel= \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">online mentoring via TJEd High<\/a>, and reading lessons.<\/p>\n<h4>Drop Everything and Read\/Lunch<\/h4>\n<p>We take turns preparing a simple lunch, then gather to eat while we &#8220;Drop Everything and Read.&#8221;\u00a0I love it because I get to enjoy my own book guilt-free!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-56815\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/5-814x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"472\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/5-814x1024.jpg 814w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/5-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/5-768x966.jpg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/5.jpg 1018w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s fun when everyone is engaged in their own titles; we occasionally share snippets if someone laughs out loud or reaches a good bit they just have to share.<\/p>\n<h4>More Learning Time<\/h4>\n<p>See above! Around 3pm is when we usually transition to the afternoon part of our day.<\/p>\n<h4>Outdoors<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1113.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56826\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1113.jpg 700w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1113-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the frigid temperatures we&#8217;ve been having, this doesn&#8217;t last too long at the moment, and has included lots of sledding in recent days!<\/p>\n<h4>Afternoon Projects<\/h4>\n<p>Reading, chatting, musical instruments, computer time, showers for kids, introverted recharging time for the mama.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1141.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56819\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1141.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1141.jpg 700w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1141-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Santa brought a digital piano to a certain excited someone this year!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Dinner\/Evening Routine<\/h4>\n<p>After eating we rotate clean-up duties, then watch a show or two together before the kids head upstairs.<\/p>\n<h4>Weekly Routine<\/h4>\n<p>The routine above is fairly typical, and it&#8217;s open enough to allow for flexibility, too, which I love. Two mornings a week a dear friend comes and &#8220;holds the space for learning&#8221; so that I can devote time to writing and blog work. She teaches the kids Spanish as well!<\/p>\n<p>Right now our week also includes piano and horse riding lessons, homeschool co-op, a wilderness program for my boys, and church youth group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1158.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56825\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1158.jpg 700w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_1158-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If I attempted to label what our family does, I\u2019d probably call it \u201cwholehearted learning.\u201d It\u2019s a lifestyle, not a regiment. A philosophy, not a program.<\/p>\n<p>Part of me loves schedules and charts, but I find anything that doesn\u2019t allow for a natural flow feels stifling. I don\u2019t plan too far ahead, because I&#8217;ve learned through the years how quickly things can change. Instead, I pay attention and try (imperfectly) to do the next right thing, believing God will get us where we each need to be in the end.<\/p>\n<p>That concept works just as well now as it did when the children were younger, because no matter what age we are, life always unfolds one precious day at a time.
