This fluctuation makes weather watching especially fun. <strong>Every day there is something new to discover!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Observing the Weather<\/h3>\n<p>As long as the conditions are safe to be outside, the kids and I try to be outdoors at least once a day.  Sun, rain, or snow, <strong>our main method of weather observation is getting out there and experiencing it! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While we&#8217;re outside, I encourage the kids to think about what we are experiencing with our senses.\u00a0 We make a note of the temperature and I like to give them some gentle prompting to make observations on their own.\u00a0 This year my third grader is learning to read a barometer as well.<\/p>\n<h4>Some Thoughtful Questions to Ask:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>What does it <strong>LOOK<\/strong> like outside?<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>What does the air<strong> FEEL<\/strong> like on your skin?<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>What do we <strong>HEAR<\/strong>?<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>What does it<strong> SMELL <\/strong>like outside? <em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>What should we <strong>WEAR<\/strong> on a day like today?<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Keeping Track of Your Observations<\/h3>\n<p>There are many different options for a homeschooling family wanting to record their weather observations.  Today I&#8217;m sharing with you two fun methods that our family has used.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/weathertree.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5490\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/weathertree.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/weathertree.jpg 500w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/weathertree-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/weathertree-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/weathertree-260x195.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>A Weather Tree<\/h4>\n<p>Last year, our family made a weather tree. (You&#8217;ll notice my toddler helped fill in the weather tree as well.)<\/p>\n<p>I have noticed a few variations of this, but here is what we did:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>First, we photocopied a picture of a tree from the book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/All-Year-Round-Lifeways-Druitt\/dp\/1869890477\">All Year &#8216;Round<\/a> <em>(you could draw your own tree, too)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>We assigned a color code for different types of weather.<\/li>\n<li>Each day we would observe the weather and then color in the date&#8217;s leaf with the appropriate colored pencil.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>A Weather Spinner<\/h4>\n<p>This year, prompted by our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oakmeadow.com\/index.php\">Oak Meadow<\/a> 3rd grade syllabus, we made a weather spinner.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I drew a large circle on a piece of paper.<\/li>\n<li>Jillian colored a picture with weather that was sunny, snowy, rainy, and  windy.<\/li>\n<li>Then we made an arrow and cut out both the arrow and the circle.<\/li>\n<li>We attached the  arrow to the center of the picture with a brad.<\/li>\n<li>We glued them to a  piece of cardboard, being careful to place glue only around the edge  of the circle so that our arrow was free to spin around the chart.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/weatherspinner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5491\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/weatherspinner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/weatherspinner.jpg 500w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/weatherspinner-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Our finished weather chart hangs on our bulletin board, waiting for us to move the arrow to the corresponding weather each day.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Fun Weather Resources <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1plus1plus1equals1.com\/Calendar.html\"><strong> <\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.1plus1plus1equals1.com\/Calendar.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Weather song and Printable Chart<\/strong><\/a><em> (scroll down the page) <\/em>::: 1+1+1=1<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeschoolshare.com\/weather_words_lapbook.php\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Weather Words Lapbook<\/strong><\/a> ::: Homeschool Share<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeschoolshare.com\/cloudy_with_a_chance_of_meatballs.php\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs unit study<\/strong><\/a> ::: Homeschool Share<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/donnayoung.org\/science\/nature-journal.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Printable Weather Journaling Page<\/strong><\/a> <em>(scroll down<\/em>) ::: Donna Young<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockingranola.com\/2010\/01\/weather.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Weather Song<\/strong><\/a> ::: Rockin&#8217; Granola<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As my kids get older, I know that our weather studies will grow more complex.\u00a0 For now, though, we are all enjoying these simple weather study charts and our daily time outdoors\u00a0 &#8211; rain or shine!<\/p>\n<p class=\"alert\"><em>How do you incorporate weather study in your homeschool?
