It isn&#8217;t quite so scary after all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It will help you understand our day if you know a bit about these babes of mine:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trishna (13), joined our family in 2007 via adoption at the age of four from India; she has <a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/all-kids-have-special-needs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a visual impairment and developmental delays<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Jonathan (12), joined our family in 2004 as our biological son<\/li>\n<li>Elijah (11), joined our family in 2005 via adoption at the age of six months from Liberia after nearly dying from malaria; he has developmental delays and is still working on his reading fluency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/day-in-the-life-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51175\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/brushespicmo.jpg\" alt=\"A homeschool day in the life\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/brushespicmo.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/brushespicmo-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s what our homeschool day looked like\u00a0on Monday, February 13, 2017:<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h4>Early Morning<\/h4>\n<p>I turn the light on around six o&#8217;clock most weekdays, providing I&#8217;ve slept well. Steve and I are\u00a0reading our way through the One Year Bible on Kindle.\u00a0<em>(I <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2kWdrAk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">love this version<\/a> with portions of the OT, NT, Psalms, &amp; Proverbs in each reading!)<\/em> Afterwards I read from <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2lwoBiy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a favorite\u00a0devotional<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2kMGiGt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prayer book.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Around 6:30 am I usually begin whatever the most important writing work is for\u00a0that day. Lately that&#8217;s been our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/heal-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Heal the World Book Club&#8211;and it&#8217;s the perfect time to sign up for March; we just announced our new\u00a0book titles<\/strong><\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3935-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52112\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3935-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3935-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3935-1-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the kids doing now?<\/strong> Jonathan, my early riser, is likely downstairs reading. Trishna and Elijah like to sleep later, but everyone&#8217;s typically awake by 8am.<\/p>\n<p>My boys\u00a0do a spelling or handwriting\/reading exercise after waking;\u00a0it\u00a0takes less than five minutes. I peek at this when they&#8217;re done, then prep\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/simplehomeschool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my Facebook page<\/a>\u00a0for the day so I can go\u00a0offline.<\/p>\n<p>Around 8 o&#8217;clock, I head for the shower.\u00a0<em>(I do have an alarm set on my iPhone to remind me, so I don&#8217;t get lost in social media!)<\/em> By 8:30, I&#8217;m usually ready to\u00a0begin our day together.<\/p>\n<h4>Morning<\/h4>\n<p>Today\u00a0Steve is home&#8211;having returned yesterday from a <a href=\"https:\/\/love146.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Love146 work trip<\/a>. But I&#8217;ve learned it works best if we keep our routine going while also being flexible so the kids can spend time with Daddy.<\/p>\n<p>During this time, one child prepares cereal for breakfast while another empties the dishwasher.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3931-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52116\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3931-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3931-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3931-1-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Trishna&#8217;s been raising funds\u00a0for Love146\/our book club by selling her\u00a0paintings!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Then we&#8217;re ready to sit down for &#8220;Breakfast School,&#8221; which on this Monday consisted of:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reading our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifemanifestos.com\/Personalized-Family-Manifesto-p\/pfmp.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Family Manifesto<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bedtimemath.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bedtime Math<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL8dPuuaLjXtMwmepBjTSG593eG7ObzO7s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crash Course US History<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Reading the Bible\/a devotional\/praying for someone from our\u00a0prayer bowl <em>(something I talk about in <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1OeVyWy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Give Your Child the World<\/a>)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Here we move into the living room and get cozy for our current read-aloud,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2m0DYx9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this\u00a0upcoming title<\/a>\u00a0for the Heal the World Book Club.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>By 10:30 it&#8217;s time\u00a0for Morning Chores.<\/strong> Each child has an assigned area. Today that means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>T &#8211; Vacuums the downstairs carpet and folds the laundry<\/li>\n<li>J &#8211; Cleans the kitchen sink. Usually he makes dinner on a Monday, but since <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2kMPBpL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our faithful bread machine died<\/a> yesterday\u00a0I ask him to make bread for lunch instead<\/li>\n<li>E &#8211; Cleans the upstairs toilet, vacuums and mops the bathroom floor<\/li>\n<li>Me\u00a0&#8211; I tidy up, then wash\u00a0our sap buckets&#8211;we&#8217;re <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steadymom.com\/2013\/03\/how-to-make-maple-syrup.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tapping our trees<\/a> today!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3929.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52117\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3929.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3929.jpg 700w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3929-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3929-260x195.jpg 260w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3929-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After I&#8217;ve checked everyone&#8217;s cleaning\u00a0they finish getting ready for their day, then gather supplies\u00a0for their independent work, which typically\u00a0begins\u00a0by 11:15 am.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today&#8217;s independent time\u00a0includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>T &#8211; Creative writing<\/li>\n<li>J &#8211; Finishes his bread making, talks stocks &amp; business ideas with Steve<\/li>\n<li>E &#8211; Listening to his morning audio book, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2mbLLb0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>An Acceptable Time<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hBfAPV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Audible<\/a> has been a game changer for this boy over the past few months!)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Me\u00a0&#8211; Answering emails\/minor blog work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Early Afternoon<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3936-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52115\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3936-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3936-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3936-1-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Around 12:15 I wrap up what I&#8217;m doing and prep\u00a0lunch. The bread smells amazing!<strong>\u00a0I call everyone to get their Drop Everything and Read books and come to the table.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We settle around the table to eat, while reading independently for 20-30 minutes. When J returns, he listens to his weather radio then he asks if we can research\u00a0natural tick spray recipes together <em>(one of his business ideas!)<\/em>. We copy and paste some notes as we go along, then print them out.<\/p>\n<p>When nobody needs\u00a0me, I go online and request library books for each child, based on their current\u00a0interests. I also order the next level of <a href=\"http:\/\/teachingtextbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teaching Textbooks Math<\/a> for Trishna, who completed one\u00a0last week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The kids can also choose to work on &#8220;skills learning&#8221; if they&#8217;d like (read about that in my post <a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/jamies-homeschool-day-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from two\u00a0years ago<\/a>), and today all three do<\/strong>. Trishna practices her cursive, Jonathan does math on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Khan Academy<\/a>, and Elijah requests help to complete\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2ezRrM2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his reading workbook<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and do his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org\/TouchTypeReadSpell\/?source=129916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Type to Read and Spell lesson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3805.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52123\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3805.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3805.jpg 700w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3805-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Late Afternoon<\/h4>\n<p>Usually around 3pm the kids get bundled up to play outside, but today because of a\u00a0high wind warning we\u00a0decide to watch an episode of Little House on the Prairie instead. This one is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tv.com\/shows\/little-house-on-the-prairie\/dark-sage-65665\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an intense episode about racism<\/a>; Elijah and I have a serious chat after it\u00a0ends.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then everyone\u00a0grabs a snack and begins their afternoon, which typically includes showers, hanging out, reading, working on projects, playing, art\/music, and some quiet for me.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I often use this time to\u00a0take a short\u00a0nap, do Duolingo Spanish, write in my journal, chat with Steve and\/or kids, take a walk, read, or\u00a0hop online for a bit more work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3787.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52121\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3787.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3787.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3787-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Trishna often paints\u00a0or practices on her keyboard in the afternoons<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Evening<\/h4>\n<p>We usually have\u00a0dinner around 6:30, and take turns cleaning up afterwards. Today Steve and I were noticing that he hasn&#8217;t had much time with Trishna since being\u00a0out of town, so they head upstairs to watch a documentary together.<\/p>\n<p>The boys and I hang out downstairs, and end up revisiting our favorite parts of <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2m0MYCK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this classic movie<\/a> <em>(free on Amazon Prime)<\/em>, before getting everyone organized for bed.\u00a0And that&#8217;s a wrap!<\/p>\n<h4>A Change in Our Weekly Rhythm<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3923-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52118\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3923-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3923-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3923-1-550x413.jpg 550w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3923-1-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3923-1-260x195.jpg 260w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3923-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last spring before <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1OeVyWy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my book<\/a> came out, Steve and I realized we needed some extra support to enable us to keep doing our work with family, this blog, and Love146 well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>God led us to Jennifer, who now comes twice a week for a total of 10 hours, and follows our homeschool rhythm with the kids.<\/strong> Plus as a fluent Spanish speaker, she&#8217;s teaching the kids a language\u00a0too!<\/p>\n<p>SO grateful for her help, which has provided some much-needed margin for all of us during this season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3955.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52113\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3955.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3955.jpg 700w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IMG_3955-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also once a week\u00a0the boys go\u00a0to the nature\/wilderness homeschool program we&#8217;ve been a part of for two years now. Trishna&#8217;s taking a break until spring, when all three kids will be involved again.<\/p>\n<p>And there you have it&#8211;what&#8217;s currently working for us.
