And the ending? Always makes me cry. My children beg for one more chapter every time; it&#8217;s that good.<\/p>\n<p>Since we&#8217;ve loved the book for years, I was thrilled when Dallas Jenkins of The Chosen announced he was making a new movie version.<\/p>\n<p>And when I found out it featured <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/gilmore-girls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lauren Graham who I&#8217;ve always loved from Gilmore Girls?! <\/a><\/strong>Let&#8217;s just say we all went to see it opening weekend and it does not disappoint!<\/p>\n<p>Know that the whole story of both book and video centers around kids who display bad behavior. There are also a couple of passing mentions of &#8220;s*x&#8221; and &#8220;s*xy,&#8221; and the fact that Mary is pregnant.<\/p>\n<h4>2. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/39VaCfj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\">The Christmas Candle<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gTFzCn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\"><br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/39VaCfj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-50929 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/TheChirstmasCandle1.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas movies your kids might not have watched yet (UPDATED!)\" width=\"680\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/TheChirstmasCandle1.jpg 680w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/TheChirstmasCandle1-300x97.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>~ Good for ages: 9 and up ~ <strong>Should we read the book first?<\/strong> Not necessary <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Based on a <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hAPqku\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\">Max Lucado novel<\/a>, this movie has become one of our annual traditions.<\/strong> I first stumbled upon it about three years ago, and I&#8217;ve been pleasantly surprised to see it become more well-known since then!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s got it all: drama, romance, faith, tragedy, miracles, and laughter. It does deal with some sensitive topics like unwed pregnancy, grief, and the death of a character, which is why I put it in the tween category.<\/p>\n<h4>3. <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gW9xW1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\">Christmas in Connecticut<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gW9xW1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-50933\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Title-ChristmasInConnecticut.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"567\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Title-ChristmasInConnecticut.jpg 567w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Title-ChristmasInConnecticut-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/> <\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>~ Good for ages: 9 and up ~ No Book <\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure I ever saw this movie in its entirety until this year. <strong>I really had to talk my kids into trying it out since it&#8217;s in black and white, but oh my goodness: they laughed hysterically almost the entire time!<\/strong> Then begged to watch it again later in the week.<\/p>\n<p>The storyline: <strong>A journalist with a popular homemaking column is only pretending to have the husband, baby, and farm in Connecticut she writes about.<\/strong> When she&#8217;s about to be discovered, she has to go to hilarious lengths to keep up appearances.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: Some may have an issue with the fact that the whole premise centers around a lack of honesty. There is also a situation where a man is attracted to the main character, even though he believes she&#8217;s married. She encourages him, knowing that she is not actually married.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>4. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3CLjXH1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\">The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3CLjXH1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-50938 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-13-at-10.56.16-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-13-at-10.56.16-AM.png 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-13-at-10.56.16-AM-300x129.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>~ Good for ages: 8 and up ~ <strong>Should we read <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2htno7q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\">the book<\/a> first?<\/strong> YES! <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>This beautiful children&#8217;s book has been turned into an equally beautiful movie!<\/strong> The cinematography is stunning, the plot thought-provoking and full of meaning.<\/p>\n<p>I say eight and up because the main character&#8217;s father dies while away at war, and there&#8217;s a scene in which the boy and his mother find out. Much of the storyline deals with characters&#8217; healing from grief as another character has also lost his wife and child <em>(not shown on screen)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4>5. <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hB3YR1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\">Little Women (1949 version)<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hB3YR1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-50942\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/littlewomen001031.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/littlewomen001031.jpg 640w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/littlewomen001031-550x413.jpg 550w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/littlewomen001031-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/littlewomen001031-260x195.jpg 260w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/littlewomen001031-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/> <\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>~ Good for ages: 7 and up ~ <strong>Should we read <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gWh3jG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\">the book<\/a> first?<\/strong> Not necessary <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Little Women always makes me think of Christmas since the first scene starts out at that time of year. <strong>This is the movie version of Little Women I grew up watching, and it&#8217;s interesting to me that all three of my children prefer it to newer versions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Little Women<\/em> is also one of my favorite books of all time (<a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/little-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as I&#8217;ve written about here<\/a>), and <strong>this movie allows kids to experience the storyline at an earlier age&#8211;preparing them for the book in years to come.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have sensitive children, keep in mind that a central character dies toward the end.<\/p>\n<h4>6. <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gZyrZd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\">The Nutcracker Ballet<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gZyrZd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-50944\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Nutcracker__.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Nutcracker__.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Nutcracker__-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/> <\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>~ Good for ages: 6 and up ~ <strong>Should we read a book version first?<\/strong> Yes, if your kids don&#8217;t know the storyline. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Are your children already familiar with the story of the Nutcracker?<\/strong> If not, I recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gYZlP2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\">this book by Vladimir Vagin<\/a> to convey the plot before watching a live performance or movie version.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Surprisingly, I found it difficult to find a suitable film of the ballet when my kids were younger.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of them feature a creepy Drosselmeyer and an odd Drosselmeyer\/Clara relationship, and some make the Mouse King battle too frightening. <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gZyrZd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This is the one we&#8217;ve enjoyed most<\/a> and return to each year.<\/p>\n<h4>7. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=reO3C0QPk94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Wish That Changed Christmas<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=reO3C0QPk94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-50946 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-13-at-12.11.35-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-13-at-12.11.35-PM.png 500w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Screen-Shot-2016-12-13-at-12.11.35-PM-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>~ Good for ages: 5 and up ~ <strong>Should we read <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hIBIZK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\">the book<\/a> first?<\/strong> YES! <\/em><\/p>\n<p>This beautiful cartoon is based on the children&#8217;s book <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hIBIZK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\u201dnofollow\u201d noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Story of Holly and Ivy<\/em><\/a>. It&#8217;s not a Christmas book you hear about all the time, and I hope to change that because it is magical and beautiful and sweet all rolled into one!<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s a story about a girl, a doll, a family, and a wish that comes true. <\/strong>But don&#8217;t let the girl\/doll plot throw you off&#8211;in our home this interests boys just as much as girls!<\/p>\n<p>Know that the storyline features a girl in an orphanage who doesn&#8217;t have anywhere to go for Christmas, so if you have adopted children like we do you might want to preview first.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*****<\/p>\n<p>Have you found a few new Christmas movies to watch?
