My name\u2019s Kelly, and I\u2019m married to Daniel. We have five children. Gabrielle is 12, Holli and Asha are identical twins and are 11, Rex is 10, and Forrest is 7. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel is studying nursing, I\u2019m studying nursing and running a website, and the kids are all homeschooled and studying the things they\u2019re most interested in.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Tell us a little bit about where\u00a0you live and how long you&#8217;ve lived\u00a0there.<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Right now we\u2019re living in a caravan!<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not uncommon in Australia, especially for people who have retired &#8211; we call them grey nomads. Australia averages 3 people per square kilometre, while the United States averages 35. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Aussies live on the east coast. That combined with our climate means that we can spend a lot of time in nature (we call it \u2018out bush\u2019). There are places you can camp and not be able to hear or see another person. It\u2019s something that many people do regularly-the Indigenous Australians call it \u2018going walkabout.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellycaravan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-48588\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellycaravan.jpg\" alt=\"kellycaravan\" width=\"575\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellycaravan.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellycaravan-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>We\u2019re also very multicultural.<\/strong> Just under a quarter of Australians were born overseas, and 43% have at least one parent that was born overseas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing up, I had friends who were Croatian, Vietnamese, Greek, Persian, Sri Lankan and Chinese. It was very normal to go over to a friend\u2019s house and their parents not speak English very well, and to get served unidentifiable but absolutely delicious food!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, we have very unique animals. <strong>All of our mammals are marsupials, which means they all have pouches.<\/strong> The platypus and echidna are mammals that lay eggs &#8211; and the platypus is venomous too! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Captain John Hunter sent a platypus pelt and sketches back to England in 1798 they thought he\u2019d sewn different parts of animals together to trick them-they couldn\u2019t believe such a thing existed!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellyplatypus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-48589\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellyplatypus.jpg\" alt=\"kellyplatypus\" width=\"575\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellyplatypus.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellyplatypus-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><em>Photo by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/eggplant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Chan<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have an awful lot of dangerous animals too &#8211; we have 21 of the top 25 venomous snakes (including the inland taipan, the most poisonous snake in the world), the most poisonous jellyfish, crocodiles, sharks, bird eating spiders\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0but it\u2019s actually really safe here, promise!<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>What languages are spoken there? If it\u2019s different from English, can you help us learn a few common phrases?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English is the only official language, and most Australians aren\u2019t bilingual unless they\u2019re immigrants or the family of immigrants. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>There\u2019s even a joke about it:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you call someone who knows three languages? <em>Trilingual.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you call someone who knows two languages? <em>Bilingual.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you call someone who only knows one language? <em>Australian.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We do have our own special version of English though &#8211; here are some funny expressions you may hear in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Crikey! and Strewth!<\/em> Are expressions of surprise.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G\u2019day mate, how ya goin? <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hi, how are you?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go off like a frog in a sock. <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go crazy!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spit the dummy. <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a tantrum.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No worries. <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on\u2019t worry about it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ripper! Or You beauty! <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s fantastic!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What are some traditional foods there?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With our short history and immigrant population, we don\u2019t have many \u2018Australian\u2019 foods. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Native Australian food, which we call bush food, typically tastes pretty terrible! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macadamias are delicious, but Davidson\u2019s plum and lilly pilly aren\u2019t fruits you\u2019d eat by themselves, they\u2019re very astringent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We eat kangaroo, but it\u2019s not common &#8211; most of the meat eaten is lamb and beef. School starts with Prep at five years, then grades 1-6 at primary school, and 7-12 at high school. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day starts around 9, and finishes around 3.30. We start our year in summer, in January, and finish in December. There\u2019s four terms of around 12 weeks, with a two week holiday between each term, and a longer summer holiday. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that you can go to university, with a degree taking at least three years, do an apprenticeship, or go to TAFE, which trains people in more practical skills, such as hospitality and trade work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>What does school look like for your family?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>We homeschool, so our days suit us!<\/strong> We usually do most of our bookwork on Monday and Tuesday. We really like English, history, and science so we spend the most time on those. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have a weekly work list on the wall with the work each child needs to do for that week, and they choose when to do it and tick off the work as it\u2019s done. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellyweekly-work-list.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-48592\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellyweekly-work-list.jpg\" alt=\"kellyweekly work list\" width=\"575\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellyweekly-work-list.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kellyweekly-work-list-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now Friday is for homeschool group, which is always great fun. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kelly-homeschool-group-photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-48593\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kelly-homeschool-group-photo.jpg\" alt=\"kelly homeschool group photo\" width=\"575\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kelly-homeschool-group-photo.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/kelly-homeschool-group-photo-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>We typically work until we\u2019re tired, usually about 6-8 weeks, then have a few weeks off until we\u2019re ready to get back into it again.<\/strong> Our work all gets done in the end without too much stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Are there any special festivals or traditions you\u2019d like to tell us about related to where you are visiting?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia doesn\u2019t have many festivals. We have a short history, and a somewhat shameful one, in how we\u2019ve treated our native people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Many people celebrate Australia Day on Jan. 26<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong>which is the day the First Fleet landed in 1788, but other people call it Invasion Day and refuse to celebrate, as this was the day the Indigenous Australians started to lose their homeland.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ANZAC day is April 25<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it commemorates the landing of the Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli in 1915. There are services in every town to remember all the Australians who have served, fought and fallen in all of the wars. We usually go to the dawn service.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>If you moved countries, what would you miss most?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weather, and the outdoor lifestyle. <strong>We\u2019re outside for most of the day, every day.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also very casual-people don\u2019t care too much about what they look like. Everyone just wears shorts and T-shirts, and it\u2019s normal to go out barefoot. When we went to Melbourne recently we kept forgetting to wear shoes, and it\u2019s not normal to go barefoot there &#8211; we got a lot of funny looks!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think I\u2019d also miss the Aussie sense of\u00a0<\/span>humor<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>&#8211; if you\u2019re friends with someone you tease them a lot.
