S<\/span>ometimes I’m discouraged at how few books our family\u00a0can enjoy reading aloud over a school year. I pretty much always wish I could read\u00a0more with my kids. I know it\u2019s good for them. I know it\u2019s good for me. I know it\u2019s one of the most powerful ways to connect with my children and buy steroids<\/a> to bond them to one another.<\/p>\n

I know that hearing accurate, beautiful, and sophisticated language patterns is the best way to help my children learn to read, to think, and to write<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But still. I struggle.<\/p>\n

Can you relate? Maybe it\u2019s taking you forever<\/em> to get through your current read-aloud. Maybe you\u2019re struggling to drum up the oomph to make reading aloud a habit. Or maybe you\u2019re just having a hard time getting back into the groove of reading aloud after a bit of a hiatus.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been in all of those situations, and trust me- I can relate. I want to read aloud, I even LIKE reading aloud, so why the heck do I ever struggle with reading aloud?<\/p>\n

And why do you?
\n<\/p>\n

\"Read-Alouds\"<\/p>\n

REASON #1 You\u2019re not enjoying the book.<\/h3>\n

Fake-it-till-you-make-it does not work<\/em> when reading with your children; they can see right through it.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a good idea to read aloud from books you yourself enjoy, because that enthusiasm and delight you feel will be passed right along to your kids. They\u2019ll soak it up and revel in it, even if neither of you realize how important your own enthusiasm actually is.<\/p>\n

When you don\u2019t enjoy the book, you\u2019re less likely to get to it every day.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re all reading a gripping book together (like On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>by Andrew Peterson, for example), there\u2019s no way your kids are going to let you get away with 2 or 3 days of not reading aloud. They\u2019ll beg you for it.<\/p>\n

And if you enjoy the book yourself? You\u2019ll be happy to ignore the dishes and climb\u00a0onto the couch to dive into the story instead. #askmehowiknow<\/p>\n

What to do if this is you:<\/h4>\n

Ditch the book.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you are just not enjoying your family read-aloud, there will be very little gain from pressing forward.<\/p>\n

If no one is enjoying the book, quit reading\u00a0it completely. If your kids are enjoying it but you aren\u2019t, then buy or borrow the audio book and let them listen \u00a0while you tend to the million other things on your to-do list.<\/p>\n

During read-aloud time, choose something that lights you<\/em> up.<\/p>\n

How to make sure it doesn\u2019t happen again:<\/h4>\n

Use a trusted booklist<\/strong>– here’s one that’s packed with books particularly well-suited to be read aloud.<\/a> A good solid booklist can ensure that the situation of not liking a\u00a0book doesn’t happen very often (if at all).<\/p>\n

\"Read-Alouds\"<\/p>\n

REASON #2<\/h3>\n

You don\u2019t have read-aloud time built into the day.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You know how you pretty much never forget to brush your teeth before going to bed? And you never forget to start the coffee in the morning? That’s because they’re habits. Same with breakfast. And putting in your contacts. You just do them because that\u2019s what you do at that time of day, every day.<\/p>\n

Reading aloud is no different, and you\u2019ll do yourself a giant favor by making it happen at a regular time each day. This can be tricky at the start, but once you get in the habit, you\u2019ll notice that picking up the book and getting started won’t take so much effort\u00a0or gumption.<\/p>\n

And anyway,\u00a0you’ll be reading aloud a book you all enjoy, so your kids are bound to remind you! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

What to do if this is you:<\/h4>\n

Choose a peg in your day to hang read-alouds on.<\/strong> A peg is just something that happens every day in your home anyway, no matter what.<\/p>\n

Do you eat breakfast every day? Lunch? \u00a0Those are pegs. Slap a 15-minute reading session onto one of those mealtimes and I bet you\u2019ll be shocked at how much progress you make on your books, and how many happy read-aloud memories you make over time.<\/p>\n

How to make sure it doesn’t happen again:<\/h4>\n

Well, seasons and family schedules change, and you probably will<\/em> find yourself in this situation again.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When you notice that you haven\u2019t been fitting in read-aloud time at a regular time, re-assess. Be creative about how and when to fit in read-aloud time\u00a0that works with your current season in life.<\/p>\n

\"Read<\/p>\n

REASON #3 You don\u2019t know what to choose.<\/h3>\n

Picking a book feels like such a commitment, you know?<\/strong> It takes a long time to read a book aloud! Even a short chapter book like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/a><\/em>\u00a0is going to take somewhere between 3-4 hours to read.<\/p>\n

When my family comes to the end of a book, I will experience two things- one, a thrill that we get to start a new book (because I love starting new things!)<\/em> and two, a bit of anxiety about which one to choose next.<\/p>\n

The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleishman<\/a> is sure to
elicit some giggles and guffaws!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

You don\u2019t have to tweak your entire school day to make reading aloud something that\u00a0happens frequently\u00a0in your home. You don’t have to create a plan or make a resolution to enjoy lots of\u00a0books with your kids.<\/span><\/p>\n

You just need to figure out what\u2019s holding you back, remove that obstacle, and then spend your time doing the thing you\u2019ll be so glad you did twenty\u00a0years from now.<\/p>\n

Read aloud to those kids. They\u2019ll adore you for it.<\/p>\n
