Even though many of our <a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/about\/meet-the-contributors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contributing writers currently have older kids<\/a>, I wanted to reshare a post from our day in the life archives that might help some of you in the trenches with littles. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Enjoy this snapshot from Sarah Mackenzie&#8217;s homeschool &#8211; did you know Sarah was a contributing writer on SH for three years? <a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/author\/sarahm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Find all her posts here.<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*****<\/p>\n<p>This year we&#8217;ve got quite the crew:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>14-year-old (8th grade)\u00a0girl<\/li>\n<li>12-year-old (6th grade)\u00a0girl<\/li>\n<li>10-year-old (5th grade)\u00a0boy<\/li>\n<li>3-year-old girl<\/li>\n<li>2-year-old twin tornado boys &#8230; or as I&#8217;ve seen referenced elsewhere: <em>twinados<\/em> \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43553 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/dayinthelife3-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"A homeschool day in the life 2016\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/dayinthelife3-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/dayinthelife3.jpg 575w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>5:38 am<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My\u00a0two little identical alarms run into my bedroom and wake me up. <strong>I miss the days of rising before my crew and having just a few minutes to myself, but this is not the season for it.<\/strong> The twins keep me running hard and long most days, so I sleep until they wake me.<\/p>\n<p>The 3-year-old is not usually too far behind them. I used to start our school day at 8. I&#8217;ve found my stress level has decreased significantly since I took the pressure off myself to start that early.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It seemed we could start 8 if (and only if) I was a drill sergeant, so now we start at 9 and I try not to bark orders.<\/strong> \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>We begin our day with morning time. In many\u00a0ways, it&#8217;s the bread and butter of our school day. It\u2019s where I immerse my kids in truth, goodness, and beauty. We all sit together to read literature, memorize scripture, and take a dip in the liberal arts &#8211; Shakespeare, composer study, picture study, or something of that nature.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43790 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_7993.jpg\" alt=\"Sarah\u2019s homeschool day in the life\" width=\"431\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_7993.jpg 431w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_7993-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t a picture from today, but lest you think our morning time is quiet,\u00a0tame and orderly &#8212; well, I\u00a0can&#8217;t have <em>that.<\/em> \ud83d\ude42 This is what morning time looks like at our house most days.<\/p>\n<p>We read, memorize, and discuss, and the toddlers cause general ruckus and mayhem. Morning time is short, important, slightly stressful, and the best part of everyone\u2019s day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:45<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Twenty to thirty\u00a0minutes later,\u00a0we move into the next chunk of our day- something we call Morning Rotations.<\/p>\n<p>Getting one-on-one time with each of my school-age kids can be tricky with so many toddlers mucking about. <strong>Morning rotations are how I make sure to get some\u00a0good quality time with each child every day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each term, I choose a subject\u00a0that my kids need focused\u00a01-on-1 time for, and we do it during this time block\u00a0(right now it\u2019s writing for all three of my school-agers).<\/p>\n<p>I simply take the child I\u2019m working with into a separate room and we close the door.\u00a0One of the remaining big kids is left to supervise and entertain the twins; the other reads and does preschooly things with\u00a0the 3 year old. Every 30-45 minutes for the rest of the morning, we rotate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One big kid works with me while the others watch the littles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a great system, if I do say so myself. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>By noon, we\u2019ve completed morning time and each big kid has had 30-45 minutes with me 1-on-1. #win!<\/p>\n<p><strong>12:00<\/strong><br \/>\nLunch. Then the big kids clean the kitchen, and I take the littles up for rest time. Naptime boycotts are in full force,\u00a0so there\u2019s not usually any real sleeping being done these days.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, the toddlers have to stay in their bedroom to play (and make a huge mess) to\u00a0give the rest of us some peace to relax and read.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43793\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_1471.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1471\" width=\"575\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_1471.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/IMG_1471-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1:30<\/strong><br \/>\nWhat happens now depends on which day it is.\u00a0<strong>Most days, it\u2019s time set aside for the big kids to work on their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amongstlovelythings.com\/spiral-notebooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spiral notebooks<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">The kids more or less do the work listed in their spiral notebooks on their own. These are co-op homework assignments and anything else they can do on their own,\u00a0like practicing piano or typing, listening to their history audio book, or completing a notebooking page for science.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Basically, if it&#8217;s not part of our morning time and we aren&#8217;t doing it during our 1-on-1 time, it gets listed in the spiral notebook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><strong>Two days each week, our math tutor comes during this time and teaches the kids their new lessons.<\/strong> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">This has been a tremendous help as I am, quite frankly, not a great math teacher. He assigns their work for the rest of the week while he&#8217;s here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>On Tuesdays, friends come over to do a socratic-style history and humanities class.<\/strong> My brilliant friend Angela teaches this, and it is easily one of the best parts of our homeschool curriculum. They almost always spend it\u00a0reading, though I do try to convince them that there are other worthy pursuits &#8230; like listening to audio books. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>Actually, when the weather is nicer, I\u2019ll often kick them outdoors, or load them all into the 12-passenger van and head to a nearby park. The house is usually a disaster zone by now, so we start tackling it together, and then I pair toddlers up with big kids to play while I make dinner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5:00<\/strong><br \/>\nMy husband comes home, and we eat early. Big kids have assigned after-dinner chores, my husband takes over the whole crew, and I head to my corner bedroom office to work.<\/p>\n<p>I run a<a href=\"https:\/\/readaloudrevival.com\/podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> podcast and community for parents who want their kids to fall in love with books<\/a>.
