I had been in a weary season, struggling with homeschool, behavior issues, and general overwhelm with life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There was so much to do, where to begin?<\/strong> Our days felt haphazard and aimless. I lacked passion and zeal for homeschooling. I found myself wondering if I was even cut out for this home-education thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Insert\u00a0<em>habits<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/habit-aristotles.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43158\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/habit-aristotles.jpg\" alt=\"habit aristotles\" width=\"400\" height=\"335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/habit-aristotles.jpg 400w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/habit-aristotles-300x251.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Within the first few pages, I knew this was\u00a0what I&#8217;d been missing. Her words of wisdom rang true and clear, timeless. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.karipatterson.com\/habits-the-mothers-secret-to-success\/\" target=\"_blank\">We began with baby steps, heeding her advice and implementing simple habits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The keys for me to remember were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t implement a habit you cannot\u00a0<em>completely<\/em> reinforce for 2-4 weeks.<\/strong>\u00a0Previously I would assign my children more than I was willing to reinforce. This led to constant frustration, overwhelm, and frequent\u00a0<em>negative<\/em> interactions. To my amazement, scaling back and only requiring a\u00a0<em>few<\/em> things, which I was completely devoted to joyfully and enthusiastically reinforcing, has brought success, giving us far more frequent\u00a0<em>joyful<\/em> interactions. Hooray!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Don&#8217;t ease up on a past habit as a &#8220;reward&#8221; for good behavior.\u00a0<\/b>Mason maintains that this\u00a0is the fatal move so many mothers make. Let&#8217;s say Johnny has been doing an excellent job of picking up his dirty clothes, for two whole weeks. You&#8217;re so happy, that when you notice he left them on the floor, you kindly do it for him, &#8220;just this once.&#8221; But that actually <em>undoes<\/em> the habit-keeping, and will extend the amount of time it takes to\u00a0<em>actually<\/em> make a habit. It will harm him in the end, because the\u00a0sooner the habit is solidified, the sooner he&#8217;ll have mental-space for other things. <em>Once something is habit you don&#8217;t have to think about it anymore!<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reward with\u00a0<em>freedom<\/em>, not food or money or toys.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0The reward for finishing math early is not a lollipop, it&#8217;s\u00a0<em>free time<\/em>. It&#8217;s the freedom to do whatever he wishes with the time that&#8217;s left. The reward for finishing all his chores without being asked is\u00a0<em>free time<\/em>, time to play outside or read or craft or Lego or whatever his heart desires. What a wonderful, wholesome, and refreshing reward!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kari-309-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-43173\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43173\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kari-309-1.jpg\" alt=\"Kari-309\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kari-309-1.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kari-309-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So why do I bring this up at the holidays? <strong>Isn&#8217;t this the time when schedules and structure are tossed to the wind in the name of fun and festivities?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Exactly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m finding that our simple habits are carrying us through the would-be chaos of the holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>We drove 3,000 miles over a two-week period recently, and I found that keeping our simple habits in place, even\u00a0as so many other things were different or unpredictable, helped us have a refreshing, renewing, joyful trip, returning back to our home-routine with relative ease.<\/p>\n<h4>So what will your Holiday Habits be?<\/h4>\n<p>That is, what simple habits will you reinforce to help your family navigate this often-hectic season?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it&#8217;s a 4-part morning chore routine. Perhaps it&#8217;s always beginning something at 10 a.m. Perhaps it&#8217;s your read-aloud time in the afternoon. Perhaps it&#8217;s eating green vegetables at every meal. Perhaps it&#8217;s saying the Lord&#8217;s Prayer at breakfast. Perhaps it&#8217;s a nature-walk every day at 1 p.m. Perhaps it&#8217;s reading an advent book before bed.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who are naturally highly-structured, this may seem like a no-brainer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But maybe\u00a0just a few of you, like me, need a nudge to stake out healthy habits this holiday season.<\/strong> I guarantee we&#8217;ll\u00a0have an easier time easing into\u00a0January\u00a0if we&#8217;ve not abandoned these things all month long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"alert\"><i>Your turn!
