Martin of Simple Homeschool<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"drop_cap\">I<\/span> never know exactly how\u00a0to answer when someone asks me how long we&#8217;ve been homeschooling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since the beginning,&#8221; goes over pretty well.<br \/>\n&#8220;We always have,&#8221; gets a fair response.<br \/>\nMy holistic view of learning used to lead me to say &#8220;since birth,&#8221; but that one raised some\u00a0eyebrows here and there.<\/p>\n<p>But if someone, wanting a more technical response,\u00a0counts the time since my oldest would have started Kindergarten, that makes this our eighth year of learning at home! <strong>No matter how you slice it, I guess I&#8217;m not a new homeschooler anymore. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I still remember those\u00a0days well, though.\u00a0The insecurity, the worries, the thoughts of inadequacy. <em>(Oh wait, that was just last night!!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m crazy far from being an expert on the matter, but\u00a0the past several years have taught me\u00a0a few things I&#8217;d like to pass on to\u00a0every new homeschooler.<\/p>\n<p><em>Would you prefer to listen to this post?<\/em><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"\/\/html5-player.libsyn.com\/embed\/episode\/id\/12984641\/height\/90\/theme\/custom\/thumbnail\/yes\/direction\/backward\/render-playlist\/no\/custom-color\/3ebdc0\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"90\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>I hope they bring comfort to those of you getting started.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>10 things every new homeschooler should know:<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/h2>\n<h4>1. It can take a\u00a0year or more to find your homeschooling rhythm.<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1213.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42191\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1213.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1213\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1213.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1213-550x413.jpg 550w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1213-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1213-260x195.jpg 260w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1213-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It makes me inwardly cringe a bit when I hear readers say, &#8220;We&#8217;ll try\u00a0homeschooling\u00a0until Christmas and then decide if we&#8217;ll continue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Remember when you started college, or got married, or began your first full-time\u00a0job? Big life transitions take time&#8211;but by Sophomore or Junior year, you strutted around like you owned the place.<\/p>\n<p>Use the principle of observation and correction. <strong>When something doesn&#8217;t work, don&#8217;t\u00a0over-generalize and decide,\u00a0&#8220;Homeschooling doesn&#8217;t work!&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instead notice, pause, and try something else.\u00a0In time you&#8217;ll find the rhythm\u00a0that matches your family.<\/p>\n<h4>2. There&#8217;s no point in duplicating a struggling\u00a0system.<\/h4>\n<p>Isn&#8217;t it ironic that often we pull our children out of traditional school because it isn&#8217;t a good fit for them, then we create the same system\u00a0in our dining room and wonder why it isn&#8217;t working?!<\/p>\n<p><strong>There&#8217;s nothing enlightened, spiritual, or idyllic\u00a0about the current\u00a0educational system.<\/strong> It&#8217;s <em>one<\/em> option, and in many\u00a0ways a dinosaur, a leftover relic from the Industrial Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>If there&#8217;s an aspect of it you or your kids love or truly believe in, take that with you. Then\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1O2NN8R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read Gatto<\/a><\/strong>, and remind yourself that\u00a0you have the permission to invent something new.<\/p>\n<h4>3. There&#8217;s more than one way to home educate well.<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1107.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42190\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1107.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1107\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1107.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1107-550x413.jpg 550w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1107-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1107-260x195.jpg 260w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1107-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve come across families who classically school, who follow the Waldorf curriculum, who unschool, who adhere to Charlotte Mason ideas, or who love the principles of Leadership Education&#8211;all of them with now-grown kids\u00a0who have found a successful\u00a0path in life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u00a0should be comforting, but sometimes we get threatened by this truth:<\/strong> There&#8217;s more than one way to home educate well.<\/p>\n<p>Each young mind is unique.\u00a0Why would we ever assume that one way of schooling would fit them all?<\/p>\n<h4>4. When in doubt, read-aloud.<\/h4>\n<p>Serious days will\u00a0come your way, new homeschoolers&#8211;the kind when nothing goes to plan and everything goes wrong. When that happens, pop popcorn or make hot chocolate, and snuggle under covers with your kids and a book.<\/p>\n<p>Have wigglers? Take your book out to the trampoline or the swing!<\/p>\n<p>Try\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1PWAl5R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this one<\/a> if you&#8217;re just getting started with chapter books. <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1KHPOzO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This one<\/a> if you need a good laugh. <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1RCP04w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This one<\/a>\u00a0for poetry lovers. Or <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1jU7y5Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this one<\/a>\u00a0to keep older, restless troops engaged.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Browse\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/top-25-read-alouds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this awesome list for more showstoppers<\/a>\u00a0and stock up for the winter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>5. School hours don&#8217;t have to look like school hours.<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1083.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42189\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1083.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1083\" width=\"600\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1083.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1083-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some families get up at dawn, finish lessons, and head out to work their farm. Some <a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/why-we-dont-start-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sleep in until 10 or 11am<\/a>, then slowly begin after breakfast\/lunch. Some follow traditional hours and find that works best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We&#8217;ve never had official &#8220;school hours&#8221; in our home because one of our goals has been to blur the lines of living and learning.<\/strong> That&#8217;s why, when someone recently\u00a0asked my Jonathan (11) what time he starts school for the day, he answered, &#8220;About 6 a.m.&#8221; <em>(i.e. when he wakes up)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The questioner\u00a0looked at me as if I must be quite the strict taskmaster!<\/p>\n<h4>6. Your own learning matters as much as theirs.<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Teachers get in-service days, don&#8217;t they?<\/strong> They invest in themselves as professionals, and so should you.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes when I&#8217;m convinced that we&#8217;re all headed for ruin (you know the days), all it takes is 30 minutes with a good book to turn me around. It could be the <a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/favorite-homeschooling-reads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">perfect homeschooling how-to<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1ke9TIH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">or how NOT to<\/a>!), or even just my <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1KI2YNc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">current classic novel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Making learning an enjoyable pursuit for yourself shows your kids how much it matters in life.<\/p>\n<h4>7. Guess what prepares kids for real life? Real life.<\/h4>\n<p>Raise your hand if you, as an adult, spend five days a week\u00a0in a single building with 20-30 other adults your same age.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone?<\/p>\n<p><strong>In a healthy family, real life is simply an incredible\u00a0way to prepare kids for real life<\/strong>&#8211;making all <a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/socialization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">those socialization fears<\/a> beyond pointless.<\/p>\n<h4>8. It&#8217;s okay to take a break when you (or they) need one.<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1057.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42188\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1057.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1057\" width=\"500\" height=\"692\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1057.jpg 500w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_1057-217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Repeat after me: Humans are not robots. We don&#8217;t have to use every minute perfectly in order to move our kids&#8217; educations forward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In a society overflowing with anxious &#8220;doing,&#8221; model calm &#8220;being&#8221;<\/strong>&#8211;patience and character are every bit as important as math and language arts.<\/p>\n<h4>9. Find\u00a0their passion, and you&#8217;ve found the key that will\u00a0unlock their love of learning.<\/h4>\n<p>Every child has a passion. You might have to dig a little, or it might not be what you think it <em>should<\/em> be&#8211;but it&#8217;s there. Thanks to the internet, we now have the resources to transform just about any passion into a unit study.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I have one child who loves meteorology, one who loves writing, one who loves military history.<\/strong> Each one has a different curriculum plan; each one still loves learning.<\/p>\n<p>And an individual who loves learning, over time, begins to educate himself. Since I&#8217;m hoping to eventually work myself out of a job, I&#8217;m all for that!<\/p>\n<h4>10. If you don&#8217;t have people like that in real life <em>(I&#8217;ve had seasons when I didn&#8217;t)<\/em>, find them online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are blogs like this one and <a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/about\/meet-the-contributors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many fabulous others<\/a>.<\/strong> There are Facebook groups for those who follow every homeschool philosophy, for those who are trying out various curricula, and for those who wear togas around the house. <em>(I&#8217;m guessing about that last one, but it wouldn&#8217;t surprise me!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Get help when you need it, outsource subjects you don&#8217;t want to teach, and don&#8217;t try to\u00a0do it all. There&#8217;s no need!<\/p>\n<p><strong>New homeschooler, you are concerned and worried about many things, but only one thing is needed: YOU. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You, putting your imperfect self on the line day after day on behalf of your little people. You, setting your values and priorities, moving toward them with baby steps each day.
