It&#8217;s a year\u00a0I\u2019ve entered into with much trepidation (in an nutshell: an eighth grader, sixth grader, fifth grader, potty-training 3-year old, twin two-year olds\u2026 <em>and a partridge in a pear tree<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>It was 8:30am on our first day of the new year.<\/strong> I was pulling the twins out of the dishwasher, scolding a child for a sassy attitude, and barking orders at my kids to finish their chores and get to the table- STAT- so we could get going with our day.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>Right, so&#8230; it was not my best parenting moment. Ahem.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard him yell.<\/p>\n<p>He doesn\u2019t usually yell- and certainly not like that, so it caught me off guard. I high-tailed it up to my bedroom to find my husband on the floor, stiff as a board, face contorted in pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2026. can\u2019t\u2026.. I can\u2019t\u2026.. move,\u201d he said between strained breaths, \u201c\u2026at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And things more or less unravelled from there. <strong>My husband spent the rest of the morning on the floor and the entire afternoon at the ER.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SH-1-of-1-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41257\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SH-1-of-1-3.jpg\" alt=\"SH (1 of 1)-3\" width=\"575\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SH-1-of-1-3.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SH-1-of-1-3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>He&#8217;s better now, thankfully, but as for my vision for our homeschool on the first day back?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Pfffffffft.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">It isn\u2019t the first time I&#8217;ve had a homeschooling day fall apart on me, of course. We\u2019ve had lots of crummy days over the years, but something about this being the FIRST day back for the year? It seemed symbolic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I really, really hoped this wasn\u2019t a sign of things to come.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So far, it hasn\u2019t been. Our last little string of homeschooling days have gone rather well, actually. But I know another hard day is right around the corner. I know it because I\u2019ve been at this long enough to know that they aren\u2019t rare.<\/p>\n<p>Hard days are\u00a0both reliable and unpredictable, which makes them unbelievably maddening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SH-1-of-1-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41258\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SH-1-of-1-4.jpg\" alt=\"SH (1 of 1)-4\" width=\"575\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SH-1-of-1-4.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SH-1-of-1-4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>So what is a harried homeschooling mama to do when the day starts to fall apart? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If we know these kinds of days are going to barge in and unsettle our best-laid plans, is there anything we can do to temper them when we seem them coming? To save a homeschooling day before it goes completely and utterly to pot?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve asked a whole lot of experienced homeschooling moms that very question over the years, and for the most part, they all say a variation of the same thing:<\/p>\n<p><strong>When the waters get rough, focus on what matters most, and just do that.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just do more of the best things in your homeschool while simultaneously decreasing (or eliminating) the busywork and fluff.<\/p>\n<p><em>Well doesn\u2019t that just sound splendid.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I can practically hear you through the screen: <em>Ummmm\u2026.. Sarah? I don\u2019t need trite advice. I need to know what the best time and energy investments in my homeschool actually <strong>are<\/strong>!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well.<\/p>\n<p>I know. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re anything like me, on some of your worst days, you\u2019ve wished you could ask your favorite homeschooling experts what exactly they mean\u00a0by \u201cwhat matters most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You wish you could call up Andrew Pudewa, Susan Wise Bauer, Andrew Kern, Sonja Shafer, Julie Bogart, or Rea Berg, and beg them to tell you just ONE thing to help you get clear\u00a0on what\u2019s most important\u2014 <strong>to give you just one little nugget\u00a0that would help you simplify your homeschool day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So. You can look at it every day and know that <strong>you aren\u2019t crazy, you aren\u2019t failing, and you don\u2019t need to overcomplicate this homeschooling gig.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You just need to focus on what matters most. And while each of these experts say that, <strong>they also tell you what they think those bare essentials are<\/strong>.
