And it all began really simply.<\/p>\n<p>I made each of my kids a morning checklist:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get dressed<\/li>\n<li>Brush teeth<\/li>\n<li>Brush hair<\/li>\n<li>Make bed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My daughter was a pre-reader at the time, so we made her a picture checklist. And for the three months between our regular co-op meetings, from the end of May until early September, we practiced the items on the list every day.<\/p>\n<p>Until it became automatic.<\/p>\n<p>Until all I had to say was \u201cOk guys! Do your checklists!\u201d and everyone knew what I meant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was remarkable, though, was how much this one little thing helped us when the school year started up again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It automated something that had been a struggle most mornings. And now, that struggle was gone.<\/p>\n<p>And so the next\u00a0summer, I spent some time\u00a0trying to decide what we should work on during the warmest months of the year.<\/p>\n<p>I hit on organizing our chores. <strong>I made a list of things I thought my kids could help with \u2013 <em>many that they had already been helping with, but not in an organized way<\/em> &#8212; things like:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>walking the dog<\/li>\n<li>feeding the pets<\/li>\n<li>emptying the dishwasher<\/li>\n<li>starting a load of laundry or putting one away<\/li>\n<li>wiping the table<\/li>\n<li>sweeping\u00a0the kitchen<\/li>\n<li>tidying\u00a0the\u00a0bathroom<\/li>\n<li>feeding our chickens and collecting eggs<\/li>\n<li>taking out recycling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(I really focused on things that needed to be done in order to start our school day.)<\/p>\n<p>And together, we walked through the processes for a week or so \u2013 this is where the dishes go when you empty the dishwasher; this is why you wipe the sink before the toilet. That kind of thing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_2415.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-38730 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_2415.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2415\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_2415.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_2415-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We created some <a href=\"https:\/\/quillandcamera.wordpress.com\/2015\/05\/18\/confessions-of-a-horrible-homeschooling-homemaker-part-ii-how-i-clean-this-joint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chore sticks<\/a>. Each morning they picked two, and throughout the course of that summer, they learned how to do all kinds of helpful things around the house.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, when I felt like things were going well, I added a few tasks for them to do on Fridays when we worked together to clean our home.<\/p>\n<p>After they picked up their rooms, stripped the beds and vacuumed, they each had a few around the house chores to help with, like dusting, doing windows, or tracking down and organizing our library books to be returned.<\/p>\n<p>Again, when the school year started up again, I saw the benefits of a life skills summer play out \u2026 the kids were now waking in the morning and doing their checklists on automatic pilot.<\/p>\n<p>They were helping with household stuff without needing help or without me needing to do the chore over.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., we were a pretty smooth sailing ship.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(The hours between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. continue to be farm meets school meets disco meets circus camp.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>This year, I\u2019m looking forward to teaching my kids how to do their own laundry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At 8 and 11, they already know how to sort clothes, start a load, and basic folding techniques, but I think a summer of walking through each of the steps\u00a0will set us up well to get them handling this chore independently from start to finish come fall.<\/p>\n<p>(I have an ulterior motive: <em>Please stop wearing just socks outside. What is so exciting out there that there&#8217;s no time for shoes?<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll keep helping with household chores &#8212; the list of what they can help with keeps growing as they mature. But I am trying to build on to what has now become automatic.<\/p>\n<p>And summer just seems like the perfect time for our family.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_1553.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-38731 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_1553.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1553\" width=\"400\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_1553.jpg 400w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/IMG_1553-300x276.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Are you interested in having a Life Skills Summer this year too?<\/h4>\n<h3>Here are a few tips I\u2019ve learned:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Take time in the beginning to set up a system.<\/strong>\u00a0Think out what you want your kids to learn, and how to keep that front and center for a good period of time.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t have crazy expectations. <strong>Keep it simple at first<\/strong> \u2013 you can always build on later.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Show your kids how to do chores right.<\/strong> It will take a little longer than handing them a hairbrush or a rag and bottle of cleaner, but it\u2019s worth it to teach them how to do a job well.<\/li>\n<li>Get good, kid-safe products to use, and keep them organized.<\/li>\n<li>Be patient with mistakes. We\u2019ve all almost put dishsoap in the dishwasher, right?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Know your kids and the capabilities.<\/strong> Every kid is different and every family is different. Try not to compare to other families where their kids are milking cows and running MLMs.<\/li>\n<li>Keep it positive.<\/li>\n<li>Reward or not \u2013 that\u2019s up to you. <a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/stop-cleaning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check out how Jamie handles cleaning and rewards\u00a0in her famil<\/a>y for more ideas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>But do give praise and support for work well done.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>If there\u2019s a particular chore that your kids absolutely detest, I say it\u2019s OK to not force it. My husband knows how I feel about dragging out garbage cans, and I know how he feels about scrubbing toilets.\u00a0<strong>The best approach is to work as a team, taking care of your home together, and team members support each other.\u00a0<\/strong>You can teach\u00a0your kids how to do a task well without making them do it every day.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I\u2019m excited about showing my kids another skill this summer that they\u2019ll take into life with them as they get older. I love how learning new life skills empowers my kids and helps them feel independent.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard sometimes to see our kids growing up; but I&#8217;ve found practicing life skills summers are a great\u00a0opportunity to get glimpses of the amazing teens and grown-ups they are slowly becoming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"alert\"><i>How are you teaching life skills in your family?
