{"id":35332,"date":"2014-11-11T06:30:32","date_gmt":"2014-11-11T11:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/?p=35332"},"modified":"2026-02-11T11:23:53","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T16:23:53","slug":"middle-years-homeschooling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/middle-years-homeschooling\/","title":{"rendered":"Pressing through the middle years of homeschooling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah1picmo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-35387\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah1picmo.jpg\" alt=\"hannah1picmo\" width=\"575\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah1picmo.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah1picmo-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Written\u00a0by Hannah Vanderpool of <a href=\"http:\/\/prayingwithoneeyeopen.wordpress.com\">Praying With One Eye Open<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"drop_cap\">I<\/span>\u2019m a writer who likes fresh beginnings and well-timed endings.\u00a0 Middles?\u00a0 Not so much.<\/p>\n<p>When I think about the middle of, say, a novel manuscript, I imagine a hammock creaking under the weight of a couple of lemonade-sipping kids or a dad who really ought to be mowing the lawn.<\/p>\n<p>Creative writing instructors refer to these in-between pages as the dreaded \u201csaggy middle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They teach rookies and published authors alike how to push through their own saggy middles with enough energy and forward momentum to keep readers engaged until the end.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is important because it\u2019s easier to start a story, and even to finish it, than it is to keep putting one foot in front of the other when you\u2019re in the middle of a thing and can\u2019t see your way to an ending yet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, writing is not my day job&#8211;homeschooling is.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been on this particular journey for nine years now.<\/p>\n<p>Our family started strong when my three kids were barely out of Pull-ups (yes, I was over eager).\u00a0 I hope to finish well, too, when my youngest daughter is finally ready to fly my little coop.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah3.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-35338\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah3.jpeg\" alt=\"hannah3\" width=\"400\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah3.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah3-201x300.jpeg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But all three kids are in middle school now and, like the middle pages of a story I love, I\u2019ve found that this season presents new challenges.<\/p>\n<p>I have to discipline myself not to become bored, irritated, or anxious to skip ahead in this chapter of homeschooling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I remind myself that there is much to learn in the middle of things.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still, let\u2019s be honest.\u00a0 Despite our best intentions, in the thick of hormones, squabbles, and burgeoning &#8220;Give me liberty, or give me death&#8221; speeches, things can get hairy for a homeschooling mom in the middle years.<\/p>\n<h3>Here are some tips that help our family navigate the pitfalls:<\/h3>\n<h4>Make sure your middle schooler is getting enough exercise.<\/h4>\n<p>The other day the kids and I were working on memory drill and they kept yawning and looking off into the distance.<\/p>\n<p>I grew increasingly annoyed with each slow blink because A) I know they get enough sleep, and B) their schedules are remarkably roomy.\u00a0 All I ask is for a little focused attention now and then.<\/p>\n<p>But then it struck me.\u00a0 Maybe if we get our blood flowing \u2026 And that did it.\u00a0 <strong>After two minutes of jumping jacks they were ready to join me again.<\/strong>\u00a0 Their eyes were clear, they were laughing.\u00a0 Problem solved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note to self: exercise is the answer to a lot of attention\/focus issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Prepare for (your kids\u2019) mood swings.<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s not just girls who experience them, I\u2019m here to tell you.\u00a0 <strong>For both boys and girls, middle school is a season of life that brings with it the gift of happy-sad-angry-confused-elated-bored feelings in manic little loops&#8211;several times a day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I know this, but I forget sometimes.\u00a0 Reminding myself that these seesaw emotions are a natural, normal part of growing up helps me not to take everything so personally (not\u2026that I ever do that, of course).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note to self: sometimes we all just need a big time-out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Read to your kids, even though they are tall and wear deodorant.<\/h4>\n<p>Middle schoolers aren\u2019t completely sure they want to grow up.\u00a0 <strong>They still have one foot firmly in childhood most days.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a dance we parents do, trying to decide what\u2019s what for a kid who isn\u2019t sure what he wants or needs.<\/p>\n<p>One way to express love to, and maintain closeness with your middle schooler is to read aloud to her.\u00a0 This is something I do with my kids every day, and we all cherish it.<\/p>\n<p>My kids are able to read on their own, of course, and they do, often.\u00a0 <strong>But the time we spend reading together allows them to be little kids again, to temporarily set aside the quest to grow up.<\/strong>\u00a0 It allows me to hearken back to a simpler time and to remember why I love homeschooling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note to self: I love this life.\u00a0 I always have.\u00a0 Even now, with hormones.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-35339\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah2.jpeg\" alt=\"hannah2\" width=\"575\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah2.jpeg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/hannah2-300x201.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I look back on our homeschool beginning with fondness.\u00a0 The journey stretched before me then, a fresh path with no footprints in it.<\/p>\n<p>I imagine its end will be bittersweet, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ll long for the days when we all woke up under the same roof, when we lived like we had forever together.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But I want to be a person who cherishes these middle years, too, because the middle is where most of life happens.<\/p>\n<p>I want to put one foot in front of the other, not grudgingly, not skimming these pages.\u00a0 I want to live the middle years with my kids intentionally.<\/p>\n<p>I want to smile.\u00a0 Making sure we get enough exercise, show each other grace, and stay connected makes me feel like I can.<\/p>\n<p class=\"alert\"><i>Are you homeschooling through the &#8216;saggy middle&#8217;
