If you too have a sensitive child who you are teaching, I hope sharing some of our experience will maybe help.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2592.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33398\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2592.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2592\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2592.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2592-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h2>Navigating homeschooling with a sensitive child<\/h2>\n<h4><em>So what do you mean, <\/em>sensitive<em>?<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>In our home, sensitivity can mean a number of things \u2013 smells can be distracting, noises upsetting.<\/p>\n<p>From an emotional standpoint, too much handwriting practice can lead to a meltdown, and not getting a math concept immediately can be a catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things that seem like they shouldn\u2019t really be THAT BIG of deal \u2026 <em>are sometimes<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But more than anything else, having<strong>\u00a0a sensitive child means always keeping in mind that<\/strong> <strong>it\u2019s really hard to learn together when stress is in the way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Finding simplicity<\/h4>\n<p>So thank goodness for \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1gXuWWV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Simplicity Parenting<\/a>\u201d by Kim John Payne.<\/p>\n<p>I first heard Payne speak at a conference years ago, and I couldn\u2019t take notes fast enough. When I discovered his book, I read it nodding all the way through.<\/p>\n<p>Although not specifically a homeschooling book, it has become an invaluable guide in our home.<\/p>\n<p>Payne preaches the kind of simplicity that <em>naturally brings calm<\/em>. We\u2019ve applied so many of his ideas to our homeschool, and they have worked wonderfully for us!<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2654.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33400 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2654.jpg\" alt=\"Navigating homeschooling with a sensitive child\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2654.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2654-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4>A quiet space<\/h4>\n<p>We began with our environment, which I had originally filled with workbooks and flashcards, shelves of books and educational toys.<\/p>\n<p>We got rid of most of it. We packed it in labeled bins, and I chose just a few things that I knew were favorites to keep out. (The rest we rotated.)<\/p>\n<p>I will say it felt a little counterintuitive, but within days I knew we were on to something when I heard:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMom! Thanks for making our house so calm inside.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Prioritizing rhythm<\/h4>\n<p>After reading Simplicity Parenting, I decided to make <a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/8-ways-having-a-rhythm-helps-a-moms-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">having a strong rhythm<\/a> a top priority for us. I could tell we needed it desperately \u2013 my sensitive child hated surprises and needed to know what was next.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We have pretty set daily and weekly rhythms now and spend a few minutes over breakfast every day talking about what\u2019s to come.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Careful transitions<\/h4>\n<p>Transitions are always tricky for my sensitive one, and so I give plenty of warning, and I don\u2019t expect a sudden about-face.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We shift gears slowly around here.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That means that some days, I will let my kids stick with a subject or project instead of changing to something else just because I had a \u201cplan.\u201d I love that homeschooling allows us that freedom.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2670.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33401\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2670.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2670\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2670.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2670-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4>Getting choosy<\/h4>\n<p>My sensitive child is also a social one (I know!) &#8212; who loves time with close friends and most activities. But I have found that we need to be choosy about how we spend our time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Even now, we plan for recovery days following lots of busyness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Homeschooling gives us wonderful flexibility there. If we have a hectic or stressful Tuesday, we might declare Wednesday a pajama day.<\/p>\n<p>We can always catch up on science during the weekend, right?<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2595.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33399\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2595.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2595\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2595.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2595-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4>Selective\u00a0media<\/h4>\n<p>Many years ago we were driving when I heard my 3-year-old ask from the backseat, \u201cMama, where\u2019s Fallujah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had no idea that my child was listening along to NPR or paying so much attention to our adult conversations.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever I pick up Simplicity Parenting\u00a0for a refresher, it reminds me that <strong>our sensitive child is like a little sponge, soaking up everything we put out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That can be wonderful, actually, as long as we are \u201cputting out\u201d the right things such as great <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1uDf48r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">audiobooks<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparklestories.com\/brand\/view\/stories-for-helping-and-healing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener \u201dnofollow\u201d noreferrer\">stories<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1l9IgKV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">songs<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1nD9G0w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read-alouds<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h4>Coping skills<\/h4>\n<p>We can\u2019t change that the world is a loud, busy place. But we can teach our sensitive child coping skills that make it a little easier to navigate.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s become a part of our family curriculum \u2013 learning relaxation techniques and how to listen to what our bodies and minds are saying.<\/p>\n<p>We also try to be flexible with our kids. If a class or event is overwhelming, we may leave. No expectations and no hard feelings. <strong>Because we\u2019re all learning what works for us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2697.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33402 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2697.jpg\" alt=\"Navigating homeschooling with a sensitive child\" width=\"575\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2697.jpg 575w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_2697-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4>Honoring who we are<\/h4>\n<p>Sometimes, I know it seems a little weird to people that we try to make sure our home is filled with calming scents, and that we decline invitations to things \u201ckids like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to let you in on a secret, though: <strong>my kids are being raised by a <a href=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/highly-sensitive-parent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sensitive parent<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it took me years to figure out that some of my quirks are a lot more easily managed if I just see them for what they are \u2013 sensitivity \u2013 and honor myself enough to not just try to go with (force) the flow all the time.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know if my child will be sensitive for life, but I suspect so.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And so, what a wonderful opportunity I\u2019ve been given to teach my young one that it\u2019s OK to be sensitive and especially that it\u2019s OK to take care of yourself and your needs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am continually grateful that homeschooling gives us the time and space to do just that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"alert\"><i>Are you homeschooling a sensitive child too?
