On one such update\u00a0a reader asked:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>&#8220;Won&#8217;t you share the specifics of your trip so we can benefit from all your work if we decide to do the same?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Several other readers\u00a0also mentioned you might like to check out one or more of the sites some day with your family, so I thought perhaps a post about our experience might help you plan your own Little House site tour.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll go ahead and let you know, though, that I&#8217;m pretty sure this is the longest post I&#8217;ve ever written anywhere. Site\u00a01: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Tourism-g60180-Pepin_Wisconsin-Vacations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pepin, Wisconsin<\/a> and the Little House in the Big Woods<\/h3>\n<p>We made\u00a0Pepin our first stop. I had low expectations for it since I had read there wasn&#8217;t too much\u00a0to see there. Maybe because I wasn&#8217;t expecting much, it ended up being one of my favorite sites\u00a0of all!<\/p>\n<h4>What to see:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; Make sure you visit Lake Pepin, as this is where Laura and her family picnicked and features prominently in <em>Little House in the Big Woods<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7147.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-33256\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7147-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7147\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7147-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7147-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7147-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7147.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Then take a drive north\u00a0from Pepin on\u00a0County Road CC\u00a07 miles to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g60180-d264405-Reviews-Little_House-Pepin_Wisconsin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the site of the Ingalls&#8217; cabin<\/a>. A replica cabin of the same size has been built there.\u00a0<em>(It has a picnic table inside so if there&#8217;s nobody\u00a0there you could eat inside!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>There&#8217;s mostly farmland all around now (as opposed to the Big Woods), but I loved the lack of a touristy feel and the privacy here.<\/strong> The kids ran\u00a0around and played inside and out without bothering anyone.<\/p>\n<h4>Where to eat:<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; As mentioned before, there is a\u00a0picnic table in the cabin as well as more on the grounds themselves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7135.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33259\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7135.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7135\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7135.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7135-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; We chose to eat lunch by the shores of Lake Pepin and to recreate the picnic that the Ingalls family ate there in Chapter 9 (Going to Town)\u00a0of <em>Little House in the\u00a0Big Woods<\/em>: bread, butter, cheese, hardboiled eggs, and cookies.<\/p>\n<p>There were no picnic tables by the lake though, so the kids sat\u00a0on a bench while Steve and I stood. Then they\u00a0collected pebbles by the shore like Laura and Mary did in the book.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; We didn&#8217;t eat\u00a0there, but another option I heard good things about is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harborviewpepin.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harbor View Cafe<\/a> in Pepin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7138.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33260\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7138.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7138\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7138.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7138-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Where to stay:<\/h4>\n<p>Pepin has a few bed and breakfasts available, but we stayed in La Crosse and then drove up the following morning (about 1.5 hours north).<\/p>\n<p>La Crosse has a nice little downtown area by the river and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Hotels-g60015-La_Crosse_Wisconsin-Hotels.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">several chain hotel options<\/a>. Pepin also\u00a0has the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lakepepincampground.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lake Pepin Campground<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7191.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33262\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7191.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7191\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7191.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7191-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4>Laura Ingalls Wilder Days:<\/h4>\n<p>We avoided the Little House pageants and festivals during our trip, preferring a less crowded experience.<\/p>\n<p>But if coming to visit at a busier time appeals to you, keep in mind that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lauradays.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">each September Pepin hosts a weekend of Laura Days<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7258.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33264\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7258.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7258\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7258.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7258-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Site 2: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Tourism-g43609-Walnut_Grove_Minnesota-Vacations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walnut Grove, Minnesota<\/a> and the Banks of Plum Creek<\/h3>\n<p>Laura describes her family&#8217;s time in Walnut Grove in the book <em>On the Banks of Plum Creek<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In this town\u00a0they lived in a dugout, Pa built their first house with store-bought boards (on credit, sadly!), and they struggled to survive\u00a0after grasshoppers destroyed the crops.<\/p>\n<h4>What to see:<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7207.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33267\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7207.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7207\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7207.jpg 500w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7207-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sodhouse.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sod House on the Prairie<\/a><\/strong>: This is one of those sites you see advertised on huge billboards on the side of a country\u00a0road, and have no idea what to expect! But it had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g43505-d2225257-Reviews-Sod_House_on_the_Prairie-Sanborn_Minnesota.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">great reviews on TripAdvisor<\/a>, so we decided to check it out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25 years ago a farming couple decided to build a sod house on their property so visitors could experience what these common prairie homes would have been like<\/strong>. They made two versions: one typical of\u00a0slightly wealthier\u00a0families and one that a poorer family would have created.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7234.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33266\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7234.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7234\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7234.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7234-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7234-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You put your entrance fee ($5\/person) in a box on their farmhouse porch and then just make\u00a0yourselves at home!<\/p>\n<p>We were the only ones there and had a great time &#8211; they had clothes and bonnets to try on, which made it interactive for the kids <em>(And me, too! \ud83d\ude09 )<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7214.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33268\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7214.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7214\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7214.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/IMG_7214-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This site is in Sanborn, Minnesota which is actually a few miles east of Walnut Grove.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g43609-d117307-Reviews-Plum_Creek-Walnut_Grove_Minnesota.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plum Creek<\/a><\/strong>: I preferred\u00a0the sites that are a little less &#8220;done up&#8221;
