I also jotted down specific curricula or resources we already have that teaches that subject&#8211;practical ideas on how we could approach each line item.<\/p>\n<p>Then I sat down with my kids one-on-one\u00a0and read over the list with them. <strong>In Leadership Education, we follow the principle &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/inspire-not-require\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inspire, not require<\/a>,&#8221; which means we don&#8217;t have required academic subjects in our home. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instead we read through the list, discussed it, and I made note of the items\/subjects they said they&#8217;d like to learn more about in the next six months.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards I was left with plenty of work and research to do later on to find resources they need that will both whet and satisfy their appetites for learning.<\/p>\n<h4>Now what?<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/homeschoolcompass2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32847\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/homeschoolcompass2.jpg\" alt=\"homeschoolcompass2\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/homeschoolcompass2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/homeschoolcompass2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now that we&#8217;ve completed these compasses, what should we do with them?\u00a0Where do we go from here?<\/p>\n<p><strong>First, I&#8217;m thinking about getting\u00a0in on the action and <a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/compass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creating a compass for myself<\/a>&#8211;<\/strong>-then reading it aloud to\u00a0my kids.<\/p>\n<p>After all, <em>showing<\/em> rather than telling\u00a0is one of the most important steps\u00a0we can take\u00a0to create an atmosphere of learning in our homes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second, I plan to review the compass\u00a0with the kids about once a month<\/strong>&#8211;read through it, remind ourselves of what we&#8217;re working on, use it\u00a0in making\u00a0library lists, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Third, I wanted a practical way to make use of this information in our day-to-day homeschool lives.<\/p>\n<p>I took an index card and wrote down the specific resources each child can choose from during their daily lesson with me&#8211;this varies\u00a0depending on their unique compass.<\/p>\n<p>Trishna&#8217;s card reads\u00a0like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cursive <em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1j0J1p8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We use and like\u00a0this guide<\/a>.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Wacky-Words-Parts-of-Speech-Practice-for-All-Seasons-BUNDLE-816981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wacky Words<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.time4learning.com\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Time4Learning<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lifeoffredmath.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Life of Fred<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachingtextbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teaching Textbooks<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1n3gOyn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Times Tales<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Write a letter to\u00a0a friend<\/li>\n<li>Write a story<\/li>\n<li>Read a book with Mommy<\/li>\n<li>Read a book TO\u00a0Mommy<\/li>\n<li>Start a new chapter book together<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/U7e1xH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science experiments<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1e5B2sm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Kid Crafts<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1cE6mwq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Little Passports<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/teaching-baking-to-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baking\/cooking lesson<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When it&#8217;s my one-on-one time with her on a typical learning day, I pass her the card and ask what she&#8217;d like to work on<\/strong>.
