When they&#8217;re off their regular school schedule (you know, the one where they start their school days with math at 9:00 a.m.), it feels like summer vacation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s what they don&#8217;t know: my husband and I are very intentional about providing\u00a0great content so they are learning all the time\u2014even while they&#8217;re on &#8220;break.&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We stock our home with what\u00a0they need to keep learning\u00a0all summer long. School may technically be out of session, but that&#8217;s no reason to put their education on hold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are our favorite tips and tricks for building\u00a0a content-rich environment.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Stock your shelves.<\/h3>\n<p>Kids who have access to good books improve their reading skills over the summer months; kids with no access regress.<\/p>\n<p>Fill your personal shelves with great books on a wide range of topics, being sure to include both\u00a0easy <em>and<\/em>\u00a0challenging reads.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/goldieblox-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32472\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bookshelves-wilder.png\" alt=\"bookshelves-wilder\" width=\"600\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bookshelves-wilder.png 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/bookshelves-wilder-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h3>Hit the library.<\/h3>\n<p>We adore our public library and visit it year-round.\u00a0The summer is a great time to get familiar with your local branch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">Not sure what to check out once you&#8217;re there? Try this idea\u00a0from\u00a0Susan Wise Bauer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><strong>When she was growing up, her mom required her to check out at least one book in these four categories during their weekly library visits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #222222;\">\n<li>a story<\/li>\n<li>a book of poetry<\/li>\n<li>a biography<\/li>\n<li>a book about how to do something.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">The kids weren\u2019t\u00a0<em>required<\/em>\u00a0to read all their library books, but\u00a0 Susan said that as the week wore on and she\u00a0finished the books\u00a0she was most\u00a0excited about, she might\u00a0actually read the poetry book <em>just because it was there.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Listening lessons.<\/h3>\n<p>My family loves audiobooks for lazy summer afternoons\u2014or any time the kids want to hear a story but <a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/what-about-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mom needs a break<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our family keeps coming back to <em>The Little House<\/em> series\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/Sdpav3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read by Cherry Jones<\/a>)\u00a0and Beverly Cleary\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/Rz5yRH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R<em>amona<\/em> collection<\/a>, and we think we&#8217;re finally ready for <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1pw57TX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Harry Potter<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1orb7jz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Hobbit<\/em><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">We\u2019ve long been fans of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/Rz6dlY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Weiss&#8217;s storytelling recordings<\/a> on topics\u00a0ranging from\u00a0the Lewis and Clark exploration\u00a0to\u00a0Greek mythology to Shakespeare. I just found out a huge collection of his work is available on Spotify, for <em>free<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\">I loaded up my phone with great stories (and <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1gyC81G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Story of the World, <\/em>also narrated by Weiss<\/a>, and our Latin review), bought a $30 BlueTooth speaker, and told my kids our car trips are about to get more interesting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/modernmrsdarcy.com\/2014\/02\/40-favorite-audiobooks-yours-and-mine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I love to listen to audiobooks<\/a> when I&#8217;m running, gardening, or doing the dishes\u2014and I think it&#8217;s good for my kids to see their mom loves a good story, too.<\/p>\n<h3>Read out loud.<\/h3>\n<p>Audiobooks are great, but I prefer to read to my kids myself\u2014especially\u00a0when they&#8217;re in their pjs.<\/p>\n<p>Find tons of great ideas <a title=\"Our top 25 read-alouds (ages 5-12)\" href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/top-25-read-alouds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here on Simple Homeschool<\/a>, or turn to <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/TRMZdj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Read-Aloud Handbook<\/em><\/a>, my favorite book on the whys and hows of reading out loud to kids (even teens!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or for a change of pace at bedtime, try the appropriately named <a href=\"http:\/\/bedtimemath.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bedtime Math<\/a>, a free service that delivers delightfully wacky word problems straight to your inbox.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/goldieblox-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32473\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/goldieblox-6.jpg\" alt=\"goldieblox-6\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/goldieblox-6.jpg 600w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/goldieblox-6-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h3>Play, play, play.<\/h3>\n<p>Kids learn through play, so make the most of it.<\/p>\n<p>Summer&#8217;s a great time to explore science experiments, building projects,\u00a0purposeful LEGO play, and other\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/modernmrsdarcy.com\/2014\/05\/goldieblox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEM-oriented toys, games, and books<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Be a great model.<\/h3>\n<p>Read to your kids\u2014but let your kids catch <em>you<\/em> reading for your own sake.<\/p>\n<p>Talk to them\u00a0about what they&#8217;re learning. Take the family bookstore-browsing, just for fun. Show them you value learning.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ll notice.
