Life is the curriculum for the young child.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Young children will learn everything they need to know and be prepared for formal learning later by participating in family life, household tasks and receiving nurturing care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Being conscious of what children need to grow in body, mind and spirit, allows you to provide them with everything they need during these early years through daily living.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Ideas for Homeschooling Preschoolers from Waldorf Education:<\/h2>\n<h3>Domestic Arts<\/h3>\n<p>As homeschooling mamas, you know how challenging it can be to get dishes done, laundry washed, meals made, and the house cleaned. It\u2019s easy to feel like these chores need to be done <em>in addition<\/em> to homeschooling, which can feel overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>Children love to imitate the work of the adults around them. By understanding the imitative need of young children, we can include them in our daily tasks.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allow time for your preschooler to help prepare meals, wash dishes, hang laundry, sweep the floor and so on. Many parents don\u2019t realize how capable young children are of doing real work for a real purpose.<\/li>\n<li>Provide them with real <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellalunatoys.com\/kids-cooking-tools-supplies.html\">child-sized cooking<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellalunatoys.com\/house-play-kitchen-play\/cleaning-toys.html\">cleaning tools<\/a>, so they can really help, and not just pretend to.<\/li>\n<li>Cook with natural, healthy whole foods. In doing so, you have the opportunity to teach them about nutrition and where food comes from.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not only are children learning practical life skills, but they also gain self-confidence through helping. Chores like chopping vegetables help develop fine motor skills, and big jobs, like sweeping, develop large motor skills.<\/p>\n<p>Realize that children are learning math when they practice measuring and counting ingredients. They are introduced to scientific concepts like substance transformation and chemistry through baking.<\/p>\n<h3>Imaginative Play<\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably heard it said that \u201cplay is a young child\u2019s work.\u201d In Waldorf education, it is believed that <strong>imaginative play in early childhood leads to creative thinking later in life. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a Waldorf early childhood classroom, ample time is allowed each day for imaginative free play, which is considered the heart of the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Studies have shown that children who attend preschools where imaginative play is emphasized (think playing house, dress-up, and role-playing) actually perform <em>better <\/em>when they reach grade school \u2013 both academically and socially \u2013 than children who attended more academic preschools which emphasize reading and math.<\/p>\n<p>Natural toys that are open-ended will encourage children to play imaginatively. For instance, a basket of shells or wooden tree blocks can become money, dishes, play food, and so forth.<\/p>\n<h3>Music<\/h3>\n<p>Not only does singing bring joy and lightness to our days, but learning songs also helps develop vocabulary and language skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Singing through the day is a wonderful way to ease transitions, and to use while working.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For a wonderful collection of songs to sing while cooking, cleaning and so on, I highly recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturallyyoucansing.com\/books\/washaday.htm\"><em>This is the Way We Wash a Day<\/em><\/a> by Mary Thienes Schunemann.<\/p>\n<h3>Movement<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/swing.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-11778\" title=\"swing\" src=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/swing-269x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/swing-269x300.png 269w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/swing.png 379w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><em>Photo by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/people\/mdu2boy\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phil Romans<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The importance of movement for young children cannot be over-emphasized. Brain research has proven the direct connection between movement \u2013 both small and large \u2013 and a child\u2019s brain development.<\/p>\n<p>Allow plenty of time outdoors every day for active play. Activities like <strong>jumping, climbing, swinging, sliding, climbing trees, and building snow forts<\/strong> may look like play, but it\u2019s important to understand that these activities are actually strengthening your child\u2019s brain and preparing him for lifelong learning.<\/p>\n<h3>Nature<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/simplehomeschl.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/nature.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11786 size-full\" title=\"nature\" src=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/nature.png\" alt=\"Homeschooling preschoolers: life is the curriculum\" width=\"418\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/nature.png 418w, https:\/\/simplehomeschool.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/nature-300x222.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><em>Photo by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/people\/nicoletagabriela\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nicoleta gramada<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Spending time outdoors through all seasons observing nature provides your science \u201ccurriculum.\u201d There is no need to give a child scientific explanations of the processes of nature, which are abstract and meaningless to a young child.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Encourage your child\u2019s sense of wonder, awe and reverence for nature<\/strong>. Let him marvel at the changes she notices throughout the season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Collect items found on your nature walks and display them on a \u201cnature table\u201d at home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This sense of wonder will lead to curiosity about the natural world and a desire to learn more, as he gets older.<\/p>\n<h3>Games<\/h3>\n<p>Games are fun, but there is so much to be <em>learned<\/em> through game playing!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Classic physical games<\/strong> such as <strong>jump rope<\/strong> not only help develop a child\u2019s body and brain, but through reciting rhythmic jump rope rhymes, a child is also developing memory and language skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Traditional circle games<\/strong> such as \u201cRing Around the Rosey,\u201d or \u201cDuck Duck Goose\u201d help children develop social skills, like learning to take turns.<\/p>\n<p>There are many great <strong>cooperative board games<\/strong> to help develop logic, language, sequencing and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Competitive games with winners and losers are very difficult for children under five to handle, and often lead to crying or cheating because of a preschooler\u2019s strong desire to win. On the other hand, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellalunatoys.com\/games\/cooperative-games.html\">cooperative games<\/a> allow everyone to work together toward a common goal.<\/p>\n<h3>Artistic Activities<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Painting, drawing, handwork, and crafts<\/strong> help develop a child\u2019s fine motor skills.<\/p>\n<p>Again, neurological science has shown us that the nerves in the fingertips are directly wired to the brain, and by developing a child\u2019s small motor skills through these activities, neurological pathways are being formed and strengthened, which lead to an increased capacity for learning.<\/p>\n<p>By living life consciously and with purpose, and by including our children in daily living, \u201cLife\u201d has more lessons to teach our children than even the most prestigious packaged curriculum could ever hope to provide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"alert\"><em>Are you homeschooling preschoolers?
