Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Jen. I wonder the same thing. I can’t imagine how difficult all of this must be for children in unstable circumstances – school was likely their only respite.

While I am a homeschooling parent, even in my small town I know (from my best friend) that there are quite a lot of children that come to school and receive the love, attention, and even food they don’t get at home. While in an ideal world every home would be a loving home that isn’t the case. Also, as much as I know homeschooling is a good choice for our family, it isn’t the right choice for everyone. And that’s the truth.

However, let’s also take this time to reflect on all those many children who are not experiencing this crisis in a safe and secure family dynamic, and what we can do to help. Many children escape unhappy homes for schools, rec centers, playgrounds, or the homes of extended family or friends. All these avenues are now closed for those living in homes of physical and emotional abuse, substance abuse, and severe mental illness of a caregiver. Not all children will come out of this “distance learning” experience the better for it. How can we contribute our stimulus money and our time and energy to supporting organizations and families that need our help? Just something that is on my heart and mind these days . . .
