Seeing the homes makes such a huge difference. The first one I visited when researching Wilder’s books was the Wilder farm in upstate NY since it is only 8 hours from me. Some of my photos even made it into my book The Laura Ingalls Wilder Companion: A Chapter-by-Chapter Guide (Chicago Review Press, 2020).

Thank you for encouraging others to visit the homesites! Visitors (and purchases to their museum stores) makes a huge difference in preserving these homesites!

My husband is retiring from the military next year and we are doing a 1 year RV trip around the U.S. before he begins civilian work. My youngest daughter (9), who is obsessed with all things Little House on the Prairie does not want to go and recently said, “I’ll only go if we can go to all the Little House places when we are on the trip.” How perfect that just a few weeks later I heard you on RAR, I was so excited to show this to my daughter to get her excited about this trip, thank you for sharing your Little house trip.

It was a really pretty area, kind of in the middle of nowhere which added to its charm. Looks like a fun trip!

Thanks for the time you put into it, and looks like a wonderful trip (a few years ago).

Sorry didn’t mean to misspell your name. It was autocorrect. :/

I have been reading your post to help us out with visiting the sites. Thanks so much for putting your time into it. As I write this we are camping at lake Pepin campground and we will be moving on to some of the other sites on the list including Badlands and Mt. Rushmore. I had no idea of this little relation to the Ingalls. What a great thing to be able to share this with our kids.

Thank you so much for sharing and for taking the time to list so many important details about the sites. I loved the book as a girl, and my ten year old son has read the series twice. We’ve read most of the books aloud as a family too, so my 7 and 5 year old are big fans as well. My youngest has been asking… “can we go visit little house?” I’d love to make this trip happen – pretty much exactly as you list it. (I too would have made a picnic with bread & butter & cheese — just like in the books 🙂 ) We would be traveling from the middle of the east coast, and I was wondering if you could share any additional info with me, maybe via email? I know you must be so busy, so I understand if not. I guess I’m wondering how long the trip took, and if there are other interesting things along the way? Or for on the drive home? Also, what time of year did your family go? It seems we have the same preference about crowds & busy times of year.
I really enjoy and appreciate your blog. Thank you.
